bagels cape cod to boston, providence

Live on cape cod . Crave a good bagel. Bagel port made a pretty good bagel but that was several years ago. Brown Bag was passable but they have changed. I am willing to travel. any idea's where a good bagel could be found ? Partial to pumpernickel but like others too.
thanks for any ideas

Don't know what part of the Cape you're on, but Cape Cod Bagels, in Falmouth, is pretty good, and worth a try. There's also a place in Orleans called Jo Mama's that sells H&H bagels, imported from Manhattan frozen, which they finish--they're really good, but can be pricey.

Not bagels, but there are great breads at Pain D'Avignon in Hyannis, and PB Boulangerie in Wellfleet.

actually Pain D'Avignon does have bagels which are good from bread point of view but not great bagels. I live in barnstable village area--mid cape. i will try Jo Mama's first than falmouth as I am not in the area much. thanks for recommendations!

what about mail order?? I'd freeze them. not as good as fresh but ....

Probably get blasted for this, but I kind of like Panera's bagels.

Unfortunately, shipping bagels tends to be a very expensive proposition. From NYC, H&H ships them, as does Kossar's Bialies (which makes better bagels than bialies, IMHO). You'd like either one, but it's not cheap (though, given what gas costs, it might not be totally ridiculous versus driving too far for bagels). One of my private indulgences is ordering 6 dozen bagels from St. Viateur in Montreal. Sesame is the only way to go, and they're not like "normal" bagels (that is, they're thinner, with a bigger hole), but they're made with a wood-burning oven and taste great. They also freeze really well.

thanks for replies. i guess i'll first try jo mama's and go from there.
my brother lives in NJ and I keep meaning to ask him to bring me some when he comes.
but i never seem to remember in time and they would be local to him. probably better than here though.

There are good bagels in the Boston area, by the way. Depending on what you'd be near, there's Katz's in Chelsea (haven't been, but heard great things), Rosenfeld's in Newton Center (not my favorite, but may people like them), and Cafe Fresh (with locations in Walpole, Dedham, Needham and Framingham, these are my favorites.

                Hope that helps.

                  winedude,
cafe fresh seems like a good possibility as my sister-in-law lives in needham. do they have pumpernickel bagels? i'll put them on my list with Jo Mama's to try.
                  thanks again

Yes, they do have pumpernickel ones, and their marble ones are pretty good, too. They're relatively inexpensive, as well, around $7.50 for a bakers dozen. Excellent, homemade cream cheese spreads, as well.
