LOOKING FOR OLD SCHOOL STEAK AND SEAFOOD NEAR WATER BETWEEN LA & LAGUNA

ralston6000 May 25, 2011 11:33 PM

Hi there. I am looking for a dimly lit, old school steak and seafood place near the water anywhere between LA and Laguna. I want a Chart House-ey type of place but better than the Chart House... you know the kind of place that has a dinner salad on a chilled plate, great seafood, a strong cocktail and maybe Mud Pie for dessert. I have been to Captain Jack's in Sunset Beach and that is great but looking for an alternative. If anyone has any ideas, I would be most obliged!

Looking for "Old School", then you should check out these 4 pages of Classic L.A. Restaurants:

Also, you might find the list and price comparison I did a few years ago on L.A. Steak dinners helpful:

While far from the sea the best "old school" surf and turf restaurant in the greater Los Angeles area is the Dal Rae in Pico Rivera. Whenever (and I mean anytime, without fail) we are in that area we eat there.

Wow, Thanks. I liked your review. That fits the bill almost perfectly. I love the photos I saw online, too. I wish there were more of these great old places around. I think I may go Saturday! Thanks again.

I work down the street from the Dal Rae, so I can't say I get there whenever I'm in the area, but it is definitely "old school", with very good quality food.

Try The Arches, John Wayne's old hangout. They moved from their original Pacific Coast Highway location, but they are still in Newport Beach. Pretty sure they will match your requirements.

We ate at The Arches a couple of months ago. This is definitely old school, starting with a very generous martini. We never made it to dessert. The restaurant has a real retro feeling. I liked it a lot.

Sounds like "A Restaurant" will fit the bill from the criteria you laid out.

No ocean view (but the ocean is a block away) The Galley in Santa Monica is certainly old school and it's been there since 1934.

Also very old school and 50+ years in it's same location is Chez Jay just a few blocks away in almost the same neighborhood. 1/2 block south of the Santa Monica Pier.
