Via Allegro????!!!!

The once 4* rating Via Allegro is no longer featured in Toronto Life Restaurant guide. Has it gone out of business or has the quality of its food gone down hill so much that its not even worth a mention? If not the food at least its superb wine list.?!

  1. They had one painfully bad review in Toronto Life and their star rating went down, this started a couple of years ago and continued since then. I've also noticed they are no longer listed. I wish I still had a copy of that review because it was so bad that it was laugh out loud funny. A fair question is how does TL determine who gets listed and can a restaurant opt out of the magazine. I would love to know how much advertising influences a restaurant being listed and the rating they get. As far as Via Allegro being a 4* restaurant, my experience was that it deserved the bad review and drop in star rating.

    1. This is good to know, though I found the food over rated, I was planning a lunch/dinner there because of the vegetarian options for some of our guests and the "easy to please" nature of pasta.

Are there any other decent fine dining substitutes in Etobicoke/Mississauga?

Maybe Sushi Kaji would please certain vegetarians.

Thanks, but sushi is not an option they are not pescatarians nor would the parents enjoy it. I need something with tablecloths and cutlery. The SO and I enjoy SK on our own time.

To answer one of your first questions, Via Allegro is still open. It sounds as though you've been and know what to expect. I haven't been in about a year, but too thought it was overrated. Having said that, I doubt if it's gone downhill much, probably just what you previously experienced. Not too many "fine dining" establishments in Etobicoke (sadly) ...

If good family-ish Italian will substitute (better than family cuisine but not fine dining), ViBo (Bloor and RY) has a good Italian wine list and a good kitchen.

If trendy and good will substitute, you may want to consider Earth Bloor West which has just opened.

            Totally agree with CocoTo.
Vibo and Globe Earth were the first two restaurants that popped into my head.
Also, Bloom (Bloor and Windermere) is quite nice.

I wouldn't say these recs are exactly fine dining... but definatley good food and service.

Thanks for the recs. I didn't know there was a Globe outpost in the west end.

I was at Posticino not too long ago. I think it would suit your criteria. The food doesn't look that special from the menu, but everything was well prepared. The wine selection was excellent.

That's another good choice ... I forgot about Posticino

          3. I have only been there once so I have no comparison for what it used to be like, but when I went in March, the service was terrible. It was a long time between when we ordered and when we finally got our appetizers. And then it was an hour before we finally got our mains. The food was far too overpriced. The quality was decent, but even at 2/3 of the prices they were charging, it would still be expensive. I would not return.
