Law school student studying for Bar seeks CHEAP EATS near NYU

Although I've been to a few nice restaurants downtown, I find myself not knowing a thing about the cheap eats around the Sullivan/McDougal/West 4 Street area, which is where I'm currently studying for the bar. I'll be in the library pretty much all day and need to find a few places near NYU to buy lunch and dinner. So far, I've tried the Dosa cart guy and Mamoun's on McDougal. Do you guys know of any particular good places nearby? Also, are there any good places for desert (maybe gelateo)? I've searched through several boards on this topic but the posts are rather old and a bunch of the restaurants/cafes mentioned there no longer exist (i.e. Indian Bread. Co.). I'd like to start an updated 2011 thread.

Thanks for your input!

There's a pretty recent thread here:

If you like pizza, Bleecker St, Joe's, and Artichoke are all nearby.

There's also a Dos Toros that just opened on Bleecker and Carmine St. as well as Thelewala and Currywurst Bros.:

If you like sandwiches, you're in a good place.

    For gelato:
    Otto
    L'Arte de Gelato
Grom -- pricey for the quantity though
    Cones
    Amorino -- opening soon
Love Gelato -- recently opened, I have not tried but there's a short discussion here:

    Other sweets nearby:
    Boise Tea Parlor
    Patisserie Claude
Joe the Art of Coffee carries Doughnut Plant, Ceci Cela, and more
    Amy's Bread
    Murray's -- look for the artisan chocolate bars/Ding Dongs/etc.
Pasticceria Rocco -- when they reopen (hopefully soon) try a cannoli. You can also try Bruno.
Magnolia Bakery -- try some icebox cake or banana pudding if you can stand the line
    Sweet Revenge
    Payard
Financier Patisserie -- new location on Astor Place
    Mille-Feuille Patisserie -- new

Either of the Kati roll places on macdougal (the one thats been there the longest is the kati roll company at 99 macdougal, but there is a new place across the street called thelewala that claims to do calcutta style rolls - i cant say they seemed terribly distinctively calcuttan, and im not sure kati rolls are any more regionalized than other fast food).

Thelewala is a bit less expensive than kati roll company, offers a few other options (chaats) and when we stopped in last week i really enjoyed everything we tried, though the bhel puri wasnt anything to write home about, i thought the lamb roll i ordered was better than the Kati Roll Co.

Cafe Asean (http://www.cafeasean.com/) does take out. It's not super cheap, but it may be a good place to mix it up once in a while.

All the best on your exam.

yum! Thank you all for your input. I will be trying all of these, one by one. Went by cafe 'ino on Beford today for their famous truffled egg toast (I didn't have breakfast) and it was delicious. I'm adding it to the list. Tomorrow I think I'll stop by Thelewala...
