Restaurant to take Iowan in Half Moon Bay?

I'll be meeting a friend visiting from Iowa for a weekday lunch in Half Moon Bay. A restaurant with good, moderately priced food and an ocean view would be ideal.

Pasta Moon will be my backup plan if we can't find a decent oceanfront place.

Thanks!

  1. I think you may have to go for either view or food. Navio has both but it is at a Ritz Carlton hotel and prices are on the high side. Moss Beach Distillery has great views but pedestrian food. Pasta Moon is fine and there area few nice lunch places in Downtown Half Moon Bay. I think your best option is Sam's Chowder House. Water view, great seafood and open for lunch

    1. Miramar Beach Inn Restaurant is a great place and on the water.Moss Beach Distillery is realyl a great place too, on the water and it has a ghost. Sams Chowder house (I havent tried it) is always busy but I havent heard great reviews.

      1. If the weather is good, how about a picnic? Get some goodies at New Leaf Market and sit on the beach.

        1. HMB Brewery has some decent grub and some ocean views. You can sit outside too.

          1. Barbara's Fish Trap is right on the water. Miramar is nicer, maybe more expensive, I'm not sure the food's any better. Too bad Costanera doesn't serve lunch.

+ 1 for Barbara's Fish Trap....tempura scallops are quite fine....

            2. Nothing with an ocean view will be as good as Pasta Moon. That said if you choose well both Barabara's Fish Trap and Half Moon Bay Brewery can be good choices. Barbara's has very good fish and chips and mussels in red sauce and cheesey crab bread if you like that sort of a thing (sometimes I do :-) HMB Brewery has a good burger and if you ask them to cook the their fried calamari "well done" it can offer mouthfulls of golden, crispy deliciouness. HMB Brewery is best if the weather is fine as the deck has the best.

              1. Hey, does anyone down there know if the restaurant space in the San Benito House is open these days? I've always liked the (various) restaurants that inhabit it, but it's kind of a cursed space - no frontage, weird shaped room, too cold.

Or, is that kitchen cooking for the bar tables at the front of San Benito house? I always like the style there over Pasta Moon --- but have not eaten at PM thus can't comment.

I've not been but a friend who calls the SBH bar his local said the restaurant is open. Of the restuarants I've tried in HMB/Princeton-on-Sea/El Granada I think PM has the best food.

                2. Attention: Not tourist traps!

The Gibraltar Cafe in El Granada is a standout, only open for dinner. Wonderful Moroccan/Mediterranean food, beautifully presented by Chef Jose-Louis.

Pasta Moon does it right, now offering 4-7PM $10. wood fired pizzas, way exceptional! Offers a very good Cal/Italian menu using organic and sustainable products whenever possible.Overall food experience exceeded my expectations.

Someone mentioned the San Benito house, I'd say just OK. But, right next door is probably the best sandwich in town the Garden Deli, all the locals will tell you. All made to order with fantastic house baked San Bonito breads, simple, cheap, good lunch. get it to go and head on down to the beach..best bet!

Best Breakfast, you should try 'Catch JoAnns' in the Princeton harbor. Where else are you going to get just off the boat snapper & eggs...Yummm...
Plus this is where the local fishermen go as well.
