I have different favorites depending on neighborhood and type of dish.
Tehuitzingo - Tacos and Tortas
Tulcingo Del Valle - Burritos and Tortas
Downtown Bakery - Burritos (Specifically the Chicken Mole)
Calexico Cart (Burritos, crack-sauce is a must)
Tribeca Taco Truck - Tacos
The Jalapeno Truck - Tacos-----

- Empellon for fabulous lengua tacos, sopes, hamachi ceviche (actually, it's probably Peruvian style, not Mexican) and friendly service; slightly more upscale / expensive.
- Taco truck at 17th St. and 8th Ave, northeast corner for cheap, much better than average tacos (chorizo, chicken, pork and beef). Tacos are made with nicely griddled corn tortillas and neatly wrapped in paper to make them easy to eat. The guy I usually encounter is friendly and patient, even with the hordes of poorly behaved high school kids who mob the place at lunch.
- Tulcingo del Valle for well priced ($2.50), generously filled tacos (pretty similar to the17th St taco truck, actually). Lengua isn't as good as Empellon's, but it's good. Also do a fair rendition of tacos al pastor. Nice staff.
- El Idolo for decent, dirt cheap ($1.50) corn-husk wrapped tamales. They often get your order wrong, though.
- Mercadito Grove for Baja style fish tacos.
- Ofrenda for chayote relleno. It's just a side dish, but it's the star of the menu as far as I'm concerned. The smokey Scotch, jalapeno and pineapple juice cocktail isn't bad, either.

Any neighborhood preferences? Specific foods/items like tacos, ceviche, mole dishes, etc. or are you looking for a specific regional Mexican cuisine? Or more California Mexican or Tex-Mex? What's your price range, BEFORE tax and tip and drinks (food only)?
Mexican food has been hotly debated on this board many many times. It might help to do a search:
