Dining and nightlife recommendations for Manhattan?

  • 25
  • Share

We've been to NYC several times and are a early 30's professional couple looking to check out some new, happening restaurants that have a lively crowd and possible after-dinner scene. We don't mind spending for a nice evening out. Also any new or happening bar/lounge suggestions would be appreciated.

Just to get a sense of places we've been to in past trips (lunch/dinner/brunch), we've visited STK, La Esquina, Buddakan, Bar Americain, Balthazar, etc.

Any help would be appreciated?

  1. On Friday nights in the space next door to Craft they are doing a pretty cool cocktail thing. You could eat next door if you wanted as well.

BTW, if a restaurant's name is in blue on this board, you can click on that link to go to the restaurant's page on Chow that has the address, web site, link to make reservations, etc.

Got it - just getting familiar with this board, I'm a newbie :-)

      2. sounds like dinner & drinks at Red Rooster would be a good fit for you. i haven't made it back to NY to eat there yet, but i hear great things about the food and the bar/cocktail scene there from friends who go often.

info here if you want to see what some fellow Hounds have to say about it:

Thanks for the info so far....Any new restos/lounges/bars around Chelsea or Meatpacking?

          1. re: tripaddict28

When were you last in NYC? That would help us with recommendations.

In Chelsea, try Nuela, Junoon, and Aldea.

In the meatpacking district, Scarpetta has been around for a few years but is still going strong.

Last time we were in NYC, was back in September. I've booked lunch at ABC Kitchen and a dinner at Stanton Social. Thoughts?

We have a Scarpetta in Toronto now, any other suggestions? They don't necessarily have to be in Chelsea or Meatpacking, that's just where we've enjoyed the nightlife in prior trips.

            Thanks in advance.

            1. re: tripaddict28

I would skip Stanton Social for dinner.

What dates are you looking for?

Does anything on these two lists sound good?

Would you recommend Kin Shop for lunch or dinner?
How about ABC Kitchen? Lunch or dinner?

We'll be in NYC in about a month from now.

Stanton Social isn't really new and I think the crowd may skew a little young for what you're looking for. You can probably do better regarding food quality in comparison to price, too. I do like it for brunch, though, since you can order a lot of items to share. But for dinner, you have lots of other options.

I've only done dinner at both Kin Shop and ABC Kitchen and not lunch, so I can't compare really. Are you looking for details on atmosphere during lunch vs dinner? Crowd during lunch vs dinner? In general, I think you want dinner if you want a "scene"?

What about Babbo? I've heard mixed reviews - worth checking out? (if we can get a reservation)?

I love Babbo and it's great, but it books up quickly. Babbo takes reservations one month in advance to the calendar day ( reserve on May 23 for Jun 23) at 10am Eastern.

I got a reservation at ABC Kitchen for 10:30 on a Friday night and I also have a lunch reso too -- what would you suggest is better? Is ABC Kitchen a place to hang out after dinner and is it lively?

How about Kin Shop? How is that at night (ambiance/atmosphere)?

Kin Shop is certainly lively at night. It's a small space though, more of a neighborhood joint, so there's not much of a bar scene, if that's what you're looking for. I don't know what it' like during the day.

How about Empellon, The Dutch, or Hotel Griffou?

Thanks for replies so far. In the beginning stages of planning, but I've booked a 10:45pm dinner at Babbo and a 10:30 dinner at ABC Kitchen (that's all that these two places had available); a brunch at Stanton Social and still thinking about where to place Kin Shop in the itinerary - either a lunch or dinner?

Any thoughts? What are good places to hit up after dinner at Babbo or ABC? Thanks!

I tried to open the Beauty & Essex site and it doesn't go beyond its logo; is it a bar? Can we get in there late (after midnight) just for drinks?

Ugh, I hate it when restaurant web sites do that.

I searched around on Google and found more on Beauty & Essex:
