Whiskey / Bourbon Bar

Is there such a thing in South Florida as there is in Chicago, NY, LA. Comfortable, dark wood, inviting with an incredible selection of whisk(e)y?

  1. I feel like Miami is lacking in true "bars" like you're probably thinking of, but your best bet may be some of the restaurant bars - in particular, if you're looking for whisk(e)y selection, you may want to consider the bars at Michael's Genuine in the Design District, and Bourbon Steak in Aventura.

I've not yet been, and cannot vouch for the selection, but Blue Piano, just north of the Design District, might fit the bill.

    1. Michael's Genuine Food & Drink has what you are looking for - comfortable, dark wood bar, inviting, and very good bourbon selection. Though it is a restaurant first, it's the best bourbon bar in Miami, period. Right now they have got probably about 15-20 bourbons on the shelf including some of the more limited ones. A bonus is that the food there is fantastic too.

Alternatives would be Sra Martinez (caddy corner from Michael's) which has a good bourbon selection but the bar is tiny. It has it's charm though. Meat Market on Lincoln Road also has a superb bourbon selection and a good vibe. Bourbon Steak has a decent selection but it's in Aventura inside the Turnberry. Very classy spot though.

I sip a bourbon every day (*except currently I'm on day 16 of no booze for 30 days) and those are the spots I recommend if you enjoy bourbon as well. Michael's is definitely the tops with the best selection.

Blue Piano is wine/beer only but it's a great dim-lit bar with live music almost nightly. Real cool vibe there and very nice beer and wine selection to go with some pretty good bar bites too.

      1. I am not sure how their Bourbon selection is specifically, but there is a library room set off from the main lobby of the Setai that is very comfortable and very nice. It is a bit trendier, but I would also venture to guess the W would have some rare bourbons in Living Room (lobby bar). I know the Ritz on South Beach had a bar called Rye but am not sure if it still exists.

The selection at the W isn't great. Rye was dead the times I went there so I wouldn't be surprised if it was gone. Never been to that spot at the Setai but I bet youre getting hosed on drink prices. Actually all 3 of the places you named are ridiculously overpriced in an only-in-Miami kinda way. I once took a date to Indomania and then to the W for drinks after. Dinner at Indomania was $55 for the 2 of us which included tax/tip and we each had a beer. One round of drinks at the W afterward was $44 and the pour was weak.

I mean, no one said it is cheap to go to any of them, but the reality is if you want to drink in nicer surroundings in Miami, you are going to pay up the rear for it. If you want great beer bars, that can be had on a budget (Abraxas specifically). Even tequila you can do at Mercadito without breaking the bank, but as far as places with large whiskey selections go, the pickings are slim outside of Bourbon Steak. The truth is, you may as well stay in each of those nights and just buy a very nice bottle of bourbon or whiskey for yourself with the same cash.

All 3 of the spots I mentioned have as good of a selection as BSteak, if not better. BSteak has the bar/lounge area though which is pretty sweet.

Sra. Martinez is a great call, though I still associate it more as a craft cocktail bar than a whiskey/bourbon bar. When I think of those specifically, I think of more bar than restaurant, darker, comfortable chairs/couches, etc. Sra Martinez, while I absolutely love it, is none of those things. Meat Market you will be paying maybe, maybe, $1 or 2 less than the Setai or Delano for the same brand, it is not like you were recommending a hole-in-the-wall in the first place and the hotels are some astronomical increase.

Totally agree on the atmosphere of a whiskey/bourbon bar. We have none in South Florida except for maybe the lounge at Bourbon Steak but that's if we're really reaching to say we have one. Take some time to check out the bourbon selections at MGFD, Sra M, and MM next time you stop in. I've had a little influence in a few of them :)

        2. I would second the bars at Bourbon Steak, Sra. Martinez and MGFD. I've also heard very good things about the Bourbon selection at Timo
