Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in DC/Baltimore and Suburban Virginia

getting to Himalayan Heritage

I'm coming in to DC briefly and am interested in having lunch on a weekday at Himalayan Heritage on 18th St in Adams Morgan, near Kalorama. To get there from downtown by Metro, should I go to Dupont Circle or Woodley Park/Zoo Metro stop? If the latter, is it relatively safe for a female in the daytime to walk across Calvert St from Woodley Park to the restaurant ---it seems to go through some parkland areas. Any tips on what to order would also be welcome--I'm interested in the Nepali dishes, not standard Indian fare. Can you get it at lunchtime, or do they have a (boring) buffet? Thanks!

  1. I've never eaten there, but I've walked by the restaurant and am familiar with the area, so I can at least help you with getting there.

I'm a guy, but it's a perfectly safe walk in the daytime. I'd use the Woodley Park/Adams Morgan/Zoo Metro stop. Go half a block down Connecticut and make a left onto Calvert Street. You'll cross a large, heavily-trafficked bridge; the bridge goes over a park, so you're not actually walking through the park. Calvert eventually sort of turns right and merges into 18th Street. That stretch of 18th is jam-packed with restaurants and will have plenty of people walking around.

You could also use the Dupont Circle Metro, and that'll also be safe, but the route is more residential and probably slightly more confusing, so I'd stick with the Woodley Park/Adams Morgan/Zoo Metro.

    Good luck, and enjoy!

I second Garlic Guy's post - the Woodley Park Metro is the better one to use and the walk to the restaurant is perfectly safe - no need to give this another thought (I'm female), also, if you will be working downtown, be aware that this lunch (including walking from the Metro station) will be a time-consuming one. I'd say the walk will take about 20 mins. each way.

I too have been curious about this place - also for the Nepali food (I was in the Peace Corps there). If you go, please do post what you thought of it.

you can combine the metro with the circulator bus- I think it runs from woodley park to adams morgan

Yes, it does. You pick it up behind the McDonald's at the Woodley Park Metro (or in front of it, a couple of minutes later) -- the first stop after that is near the top of 18th St. -- that cuts out a little over half of the walk.

          1. re: MoCoMe

If your aim is to try out the Metro, then by all means take the others' advice. If you're not partial to Metro, then consider the buses. The ride takes approx 15-20 minutes. Better during midday rather than rush hour.

Also, the L2 from McPherson Square will drop you off on 18th Street very near the restaurant. You can also take the 42, which you can catch at Farragut Square. The 42 drops you off at Columbia Rd. and 18th Street, then you can walk 2 blocks down 18th from there. If you take the L2 back downtown, be aware that the route has changed slightly, and you would need to catch the southbound on Columbia Road -- ask around and look at the notices posted on the bus stops.

I can't remember what the fares are if you are using cash. Just have dollars and coins handy. The buses do not take the cardboard metro cards, but do take the SmartTrip ones (doubtful you'll have one of those).

Thanks, everyone, for the tips. My aim is not to use the Metro so much as that I thought it would be faster, as I am coming from Union Staiton just around midday, and also that I've never used the buses when in DC, since I'm not familiar with where they stop or go, but I've used the Metro many times.

              1. re: Wanda

In that case... if it were me, I'd exit the Metro at Farragut North (K St.). The L2 bus stop will be right in front of you as you exit the station. As MartinDC points out, this will drop you off very near the restaurant.

You'll find the weekday northbound timetable for the L2 here:

      2. The staff at Himalyan Heritage are helpful and enjoy explaining the Nepali menu, at least in my experience. There is not much distinction between lunch and dinner there. No buffet, for example.
