I've bought several cakes there for birthdays, all of which were very good, though if you want an inscription you might want to call them first.

If the celebrant likes chocolate, then the Chocolate Mousse Cake would be fabulous choice. The Tiramisu cake is also wonderful. I've also had fruit-based cakes there which were great. A friend of mine raves about the Marjolaine (coffee buttercream and chocolate ganache layered with almond meringue and covered in toasted almonds) but I have not tried it.

Financier usually sells individual slices of these cakes, in case you want to sample them beforehand.

Last Christmas I brought their Mont Blanc (Chestnut Cream Cake) to a party, and everyone was rendered speechless by the deliciousness. I don't think it's being offered right now but try that one for the holidays.

I just called them and the guy recommended some kind of banana caramel cake so I ordered that. Hopefully it's good.
I love Mont Blanc cake but it's so hard to find a good one..will definitely give it a try.

Closest place is Cupcake Cafe. I find their stuff gorgeous but not very palatable as the cake is way too dry. But Amy's Bread isn't too far away on 9th Ave and 46th Street.
