Kuala Lumpur - Disappointment at Bunga Emas Malay Fine Dining Restaurant

Bunga Emas at the Royale Chulan Hotel in downtown KL sought perhaps to fill in the gap for fine dining Malay cuisine in KL left by the closure of Carcosa Seri Negara’s Gulai House. Other than Bijan, Enak and Ibunda, most Malay restaurants in KL tend to be rather low-brow affair.

But Bunga Emas tries to differentiate itself by also offering Malay nouvelle cuisine (whatever that is – smaller portions, artistically presented?).

My recent dinner at Bunga Emas was disappointing though – I found its dishes, from the pergedil (potato croquette) appetiser, ulams (Malay-style salads) to stuffed veal roulade to be underwhelming and, worst (for Malay cuisine) to be lacking in spices & flavors.

The service was very attentive, but the empty dining room should have set my alarm bells ringing. Beautiful restaurant, pity about the food. Oh, and the prices were positively astronomically high 

Wah, you must be JOKING! I wouldn't pay that much for a Malay meal - this kind of cuisine can be obtained for a few ringgits outside these over-priced, pretentious and exploitative hotel-restaurants.
