Alone in the area [Fairfax, VA]
I will be traveling to Fairfax, VA and be there for a week begining June 6. I'll be flying into BWI. Any recommendations that are go to places off the beaten path. Any cuisine is fine. I enjoy trying the local fare. Mom and Pop places are the best to find super dining. Appreciate the help!

For Italian you could try Esposito's at 9917 Lee Hwy in Fairfax. It's kind of a generic looking place, but the food is good and the prices are reasonable.

Uncle Lui's next to Great Wall supermarket on Gallows road has a cheap and good Chinese buffet, and inside Great wall supermarket they have a Chinese fast food restaurant and also Chinese BBQ meats. On Lee Highway Cho's garden has lunch buffert and great Korean food.Mom and pop Korean fast food can be found inside H Mart supermarket on Old Lee Highway. On Gallows, not far from there on Maple st. Vienna Rose and Plaka grill are great and inexpensive.Rose for Med and Plaka for Greek. Most of the Kabob restaurants on Maple are also good. If you like Vietnamese, don't miss Eden Garden at 7 corners. They probably have about dozens of restaurants and small mom and pop operations in that complex.

I am fond of saying that the two best restaurants in the DC area that are right next door to each other are in Fairfax:
Saravana Palace for purely vegetarian South Indian food, and Mazadar Kabob for Afghan.
At Saravana, they have a few Indian-Chinese dishes like chili paneer. At Mazadar, get the baba ganouj, made a chocolatety brown from smoked paprika. Bolanee subzi is also very good. Lots of attention to detail at both places.
There is also Thai Thai: despite the look of a fast food chain. it makes some seriously good stuff.
