Recommendations for inexpensive dining without a reservation

  • 8

We've booked a very last-minute trip to Manhattan, and will be there in less than a week. I'd love some recommendations for great places to eat that we can get into without reservations (or that might still have reservations available this late in the game). Would like to stay under $100ish for the 2 of us. I will try pretty much any foods, but my dining partner isn't quite so brave, so a place with a simple chicken or steak dish on the menu is probably best for us.
Thanks all!

  1. Does that $100 include tax, tip and beverages?

Edit. Maybe $100ish not including booze.

$100 for 2 people, including tax and tip but not drinks/wine? That makes it hard to calculate since many people tip on the food + drink/wine amount.

Can you give a food only amount?

For picky eaters I typically recommend Southern, BBQ, burgers, steakhouse, or a farm to table restaurant. But given your budget, I am assuming a steakhouse is out. Is your companion OK with Southern and/or BBQ? What about waiting for a table?

OK...inexpensive = entrees under $40. Forget the picky eater; I'll review the menu online and go from there. We can wait for a table.

It will not be too difficult with your budget, but the big question is which nights of the week you will be here. Many places that get booked up for Friday and Saturday are easy to get into on weekdays. Some places that should work on all days:

            Nuela

            Yerba Buena

            Le Pescadeux

            Millesime

            Marseille

            Crispo

            Snack Taverna

            Bistro de la Gare

            Da Andrea (no reservations)

and some that may be harder on weekends but fine weekdays:

            Ciano

            Hotel Griffou

            Perilla

            Riverpark

Here's a thread with a lot of buzzy places that save tables for walk-ins (waits will be shorter the earlier you go and/or on weekdays):

Some good places for last minute reservations are those that only take them same day or aren't on OpenTable or only recently started taking them. Some ideas: Txikito, Fedora (only takes same day reservations), Peels, Prune.

Definitely start scouting around on OpenTable as soon as you have a list of contenders.
