Rec please near Fenway Park for dinner

  • j

we are going to a night game at Fenway on Sunday. We would like to have dinner beforehand, at a surrounding restaurant so that we can park once and then walk to the game. Would like something nice, could be pub like but not diner-ish or street food. Will be meeting our son and his friend so would like to treat them. Casual as we will be dressed for the game.
Any recommendations appreciated.

  1. I like Burton's Grill, just a block or two away from the park. It's nicer than the crowded sports bars in the area. I've always had a good meal there.

I have to second Burton's as they are good with reservations on game days and a little off the beaten path, Good bar - so so food - very good service. If you don't mind crowds there is always Eastern Standard with better food and a great bar but a very very busy room, A third option, park in Brookline and make a reservation at the Beacon Street Tavern. Ask to be seated inside - the patio gets mobbed. They have a new menu so can't comment on the food but it's always been decent and love the new manager JC.

Just an FYI ... Brookline changed its parking rules.

"Beginning at 6 p.m. on game days, meters along the Beacon Street median would charge 75 cents per hour for the first two hours, then increase to $10 per hour until 10 p.m."

EXCEPT on Sunday and the OP says Sunday game. Actually you only pay $1 @ hour at a meter until 8pm if you want to walk a block from the Beacon St Tavern.

Very true. I didn't catch the Sunday thing.

As a sox season ticketholder the Brookline parking was a lifesaver. A beersaver, actually.

I was at Eastern Standard last night before the game. The food was very, very good. I had the monkfish. It came with clams and some chirozo sausage and a garlic-type sauce. Some tiny croutons that seemed to be some kind of rye bread, made it really different and good. It's a nice place, but casual. Service was excellent. I don't know if you can get a reservation on a game night at this point, but give it a try.

          2. we went to Burton's just a week or so ago, and I found the food disappointing. I've liked it in the past, but it was just overly bland, and the menu descriptions seemed to promise flavors that the items didn't deliver. They do have a very nice bar, however. Its still my favorite place for a post-game cocktail (because Eastern Standard is SUCH a mob scene after the game).

If you can get a reservation Island Creek or Eastern Standard would be great. Just a little further down Comm. Ave is Petit Robert which is also pretty nice. I'm fond of La Verdad as well.

Has anyone tried Citizen's Oyster Bar? Is that any good? I've been tempted and will probably check it out before one of my games.

That's a bummer about Burton's- we've felt the same way about brunch but hang in for the reservations on game day and the bar. Citizen is very small and fills up fast. No reservations unless your party is for 6 or more. I wouldn't count on them for pre-game but maybe for the post game drink.
Love the bar and the huge ice cubes are the way to go if you like whiskey. Definitely worth checking out.
