My dad eats only hamburgers. I eat everything. He’s paying. Where to go?

I’m a struggling writer who loves food but rarely gets to eat out. My parents are coming for the weekend so I’m looking forward to going to some real restaurants. Unfortunately my dad’s palate is extremely limited. Burgers or steak. That’s it. No sauce on those either. I love anything and everything from sushi to Ethiopian.

So my question is: What are some really interesting restaurants with great food that also have a burger or steak on the menu? (medium price level). For example, I think Lazy Ox Canteen is a good pick because they have a varied gourmet menu but they also have a burger.

2nd The Golden State. I ordered a BLT w/o the bread. YUM! And, a side of Sweet Potato Fries. Double Yum. He had a burger w/ the S.P. fries. We also ordered the arugula and persian cuc salad.

Don't leave w/o trying the ice cream :)

What about 26 Beach? Nice place on a sunny day!

26 Beach is the only place to get a great Sushi Hamburger, you heard me, a SUSHI HAMBURGER. These burgers are off the hook, California Roll, Spicy Tuna and an Eel Burger. Crazy Good! http://www.yelp.com/biz/26-beach-rest...

I will second Rustic Canyon's niman ranch burger with sharp cheddar, onion fondue, bread and butter pickles, herb remoulade hand-cut french fries (add fried egg 2.50)

FO is OUT -- "No sauce on those either."

          1. re: Ciao Bob

I would need to "hit the sauce" if that limitation got heaped on my shoulders... ;-D>

        2. BLD has a burger and lots of other choices available.

          1. What about Comme Ca? Good burger and a fair amount of other nice things for you to choose from.

If it were two-thirds the price, I'd concur... but at that price point, even given its high-rent digs, it's not worth it.

            2. A- Frame now has a DOUBLE CHEESEBURGER with tomato confit, pickled red onions, butter lettuce, hot sauce sharp cheddar and sesame mayo on a buttered brioche bun..........

I see definite "sauce" leaking from that burger!! ;-D>

                    1. re: Servorg

Sorry I couldn't photo shop the sauce out.

                      1. re: wienermobile

You need the latest "Photo Sauce" app...

                    2. re: wienermobile

Is this burger a lunch special? I've not been to A-Frame for lunch and since the spring menu I've only had the double cheeseburger at night (with obvious differences to this one lol).

                  2. This may scare Dad off but many of the great Korean BBQ places (Park's Cho/SunGalbee) have a fine ribeye or sirloin that thay will serve "Western Style" for your Dad -- he cook it how he likes! And you can go Korean crazy.

                    1. I like the Comme Ca suggestion.

How about Mortons Steakhouse? Dont they serve a nice burger?

                        ____________

                        Yes, but weekday lunch only.

                        1. re: ipsedixit

Do they serve it at dinner....as well as lunch?

                          1. re: perk

Coming at this from the other way round I'll say "They serve the burger only at lunch during the weekdays"

                      2. Ammo Cafe does a great burger, in addition to having a plethora of other options for you.

Second the rec for Rustic Canyon. If you go, make sure to give due consideration to the Jidori Chicken.

                        1. Great replies so far everyone. Thanks! I'll have to check out some of these menus online. I love FO but they may be the only restaurant who won't accept a "plain" request.

As to the origin of why my father likes a plain hamburger only, it remains a mystery.

Tavern makes a great burger and it arrives with all of the condiments on the side. The beef is ground in-house and is really delicious. The buns are also made on the premises. Served with argugala salad or great fries. Price is about $17.00. Lots of good things on the menu for you, as well. Just a note that the burgers are not served in the main dining room after 7:00. However, the bar or "Blue Room" is a very warm and inviting space and the bar menu is great. Happy hour between 3 and 6 on weeknights.

My girlfriend is the same way. I want to bang my head against the wall when trying to find a good burger place. Clearly Unami is out. .

26 Beach is the answer, they do plain burgers and fancy ones.

                              1. Another option: the Westside Tavern in the Westside Pavilion Mall (by Pico/Westwood). They have burgers (and steak) on their lunch and dinner menus and I've had no problems customizing orders (sauce on the side, fries instead of chips, etc.). My favorite meal there is the jar of chicken liver mousse washed down with the grapefruit rickey.
