Senior's downstairs diner has best BLT's ever!
Hey folks, not talking about the tasty and good-value steakhouse often mentioned on posts here, but Senior's downstairs diner. You go in off Yonge (rather than the Pleasant Blvd entrance which accesses the steak joint upstairs), turn sharp left for the takeout window and deal with two of the friendliest employees of any eatery in Toronto. The secrets to their BLT (I actually order BT as not a lettuce lover) are as follows:
a) just the right amount of mayo and butter so you can eat the packed sandwich fairly unmessily;
b) the crunchy, generously portioned and flavour-full bacon which is neither sloppily underfried nor the product of pre-cooked packages of microscopic thinnness;
and, almost above all,
c) the profusion of ripe, tasty tomatoes. Don't know where they source them, but they remind me of those that used to grown in my Grandmother's kitchen garden: they are cored, perfectly ripe and contain not a trace of those waxy, pallid slices to which the sub shops, fast food burger houses and alas - many reputed Toronto restaurants - resort.
All this for $5.25 or thereabouts. A steal. A delight. Ad multos annos!
Senior's Steak House
1397 Yonge St, Toronto, ON M4T1Y4, CA
The downstairs level is the DINER: casual & open morning to evening.
Upstairs is more upscale & only open for lunch/dinner.
Downstairs: Mon-Sat: 8AM–8PM
Upstairs (Dining Room): Mon–Fri: 11:30AM–2PM
Dinner: 5PM–11PM Sat: 5PM–11PM
See attached photo of their MENU (found on the net:)
The breakfast is OK, if you're in the area, but not a destination.
I find it overly greasy, but if you want the bacon, eggs thing then it's as good as (maybe slightly better than) anything else in the area.
But a shout-out also for their steak special offered afternoon/early evening in the downstairs diner.
When I was going to school down the street about ten years ago, that little takeout window at Senior's was THE place to go for lunch. The BLTs were just as perfect then as they apparently still are today; the chicken fingers beat the hell out of any fast-food "chicken" anywhere; and maybe most of all, the fries were always top-notch. Now that I think of it, I REALLY miss the place. Will have to make a point of heading there next time I'm in town...
