Places where "casual elegance" reigns supreme

Where can I find a city with lots of "casually elegant" restaurants?

My sweetheart loved The Tippling Club in Singapore when he first visited in 2008. I used to love The Broadway Diner in Brooklyn. Also Oznot's Dish. We met in San Francisco where we ate at yummy places like Flour & Water. We've heard great things about Melbourne, Australia (maybe the capital of "casual elegance"?).

Where else in the world do people eat brilliantly, but unpretentiously?

We are planning a big trip.

Thanks for any suggestions!

For me, it is definitely the South of France. The scenery, the food, the wine, the freshest of locally grown ingredients. I don't think it gets much better than that! I'd add in a trip to the caves of Chateauneuf du Pape, and if you want to enjoy one night at a more formal place, Le Moulin de Mougins is really quite special.

      Montreal is great for that.
Many higher-end places, but you'll never be forced to wear a tie and jacket.

No suggestions for you just yet.... I'm just remembering the Broadway Diner & Oznot's Dish! Brooklyn was lots of fun in the '90's- early aughts.....

I'll definitely vote for Melbourne, it's a great city to eat in. It's a fantastic place all around, but you can definitely eat brilliantly and unpretentiously. If I have to leave my home city I will definitely be heading to Melbourne to live because of the food.
