Currywurst Bros. finally open

Currywurst Bros finally opened on Bleecker Street today. My currywurst/fries and roll was extremely similar to what I had in London at a joint near Embankment Tube called Herman The German. HTG claimed its currywurst/fries are identical to what's served in Berlin and so I suppose Currywurst Bros are, too. I chose the mildest curry powder to be sprinkled over the flavorful tomato sauce along with beef bratwurst. The roll was great for dipping in the curry sauce, as HTG's were. I'll definitely be coming back. It's a tad more expensive than I'd like ($11.50 total for currywurst/fries/roll and a can of soda) but once every few weeks shouldn't break the bank.

  1. Just went again today and there's an $8.50 special on Mondays for currywurst, fries and a can of soda. That's a good deal.

That's great to know. I definitely need to stop by and try for myself.

    2. Thanks for these reports, TMW. I've been reading with interest and have added this to my list of places to try. Just wanted to respond so you didn't feel like you were talking to yourself, here.

Thanks, michelleats. Tis' a sad thing to be talking to oneself on a message board!

      2. How does it compare to Wechsler's in the East Village?

kathryn, I do prefer the thin fries at Wechsler's but the curry sauce is far better at Currywurst Bros. IMO. And I love having a roll to dunk in the sauce. I guess I prefer this overall to Wechsler's because it reminds me so much of Herman The German's in London. Damn, no Embankment Gardens counterpart here to enjoy it in, although Bleecker Street is lovely. Heh.

While I have to admit to only sampling Currywurst Bros., what I found disappointing was that it was ONLY currywurst. I like an occasional currywurst (love the version at Wechsler's) but had been hoping for a larger variety of wursts. Wechsler's and Hallo Berlin (RIP Rolf, the cart man), remain the best of the wurst for me.

          2. I just had it for the first full meal, I've probably grabbed 5 samples the last week walking past it going home ;) The sauce was very good, the portions were fair. I got it with the 3rd from spiciest and it had a low/medium level heat, a spicy food lover would have no problem handling higher ones. I was not a huge fan of the 'original' bratwurst, the samples they've been giving on the street are definitely better, I'll try another type of bratwurst next time. Should be said the prices include taxes already, $7 for currywurst with roll, $3 for small fries.

My only means for comparison is with Hallo Berlin in hells kitchen, I liked this better than their currywurst.

Guys working there were really nice, but you could tell they're really just starting to figure out how things are working. The printing of their to-go menu's got delayed, so you'll just have to head in to see the options..
