Good restaurant in toronto to go out with another couple

Hi: My husband and I are looking for a good place to go on the weekend with another couple. Basically, we need to be able to hear each other speak over good food and atmosphere and nothing too trendy.

  1. Location? Price point? Type of food?

Central Toronto (north of Bloor) would be great. Pricepoint, maybe $200 - $250 for 4 people. Type of food...all!

Cava for tapas, Zee Grill for seafood, Simple Bistro for French bistro, Quince for mid-range contemporary, Zucca for Italian.

Im my view Cava is really loud. Agree on the others though. If you want to venture further south there are more options like Niagara Street Cafe.

Zucca can get pretty loud too, though I agree that's the Top 5 places of the Eglinton And area.

I'd pick Zee in the back for dinner then the front for drinks.

I really like Cava and while others find it loud I never have.

I've stopped going as it was EXTREMELY loud - and the wine markups were awful (up to 4 times) so it never fit the price criterion either. Even their corkage-free Sunday hasn't dragged me back, although I have had some excellent ingredients there.

We do something similar with another couple and found the Globes (including Earth) to fit the criteria. Also liked Niiagara Street Cafe - but it was more expensive, and Simple was OK - but their menu was a bit simple (pun intended).

Most recent was Universal Grill - NOT as upscale and CERTAINLY not trendy (except in a retro way). If anybody in the party likes ribs, they'll be happy - and their Tingtini is quite special too.

          1. SImple Bistro (although can get quite noisy bec it's a small place with poor acoustics), Earth Bistro (solid food and nice space, you may exceed budget though), Lai Toh Heen (again may cost more depending on what you order), Mikado (not trendy at all but very good Japanese food..you can get a tatami table for more privacy)

            1. Another vote for Simple Bistro and Quince (though I haven't been to the latter for ages so can't comment on what it's like currently).

I thought of Quince too... although I haven't been there in a long while either.

The Rushton, Malena or L'Unita, the Universal Grill??
