Please: Help me find five great meals on a budget in NOLA

My son and a group of HS kids from Brooklyn are heading to NOLA to build houses in the 9th ward. They will want to head into town and have some delicious affordable meals. Thing Po Bo sandwiches, muffalata's, red beans and rice, gumbo ---- for under $10/$15 a person.

Any suggestions??

The Joint right by the Navy base is one of the best BBQ places I have been to and it is in the 9th Ward. The Joint has been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives. This meets the dive criteria. But the food is great. Gotta have the salad with the house dressing.

Liuzza's in mid city on Bienville. They have a huge menu and some of the best red beans & rice, gumbo, poboys, spaghetti & meatballs.....it's amazing. We always have a great meal there and it's very reasonably priced.

I'd add Eco Cafe on Canal Street for lunch. Good selection and some Vegan offerings too.

Poppa's Seafood is on Galvez in the 9th, Sammy's on Elysian Fields just lakeside of the 610 interchange is top-notch.

Maspero's on Decatur (NOT Chartres)...New Orleans food, genrous portions, and good.

Mandina's mid-city (large portions that can be split between 2 people IMO)...

Johnny's Po boys like Mrs Fury suggested...
