Sandusky, OH area - anything I shouldn't miss?

Hi, we are going to be in Sandusky for 3 days and 2 nights in the middle of June. Are there any places not-to-be-missed in the area? We have a car, and are planning to go to Put-in-bay one of the days. Please let me know your favorites on the Islands, as well as Port Clinton, Huron, Sandusky, or any other place nearby. We like all kinds of food, restaurants with alcohol served are nice but not completely necessary. Thanks.

  1. I think Berardi's on Perkins Avenue is one of THE best restaurants in general, not just for Sandusky. I see now from the website they are offering beer and wine, which is a new addition for them (and welcome IMO). Their fries are handcut and were made famous on the "Boardwalk" at Cedar Point around 60 years ago, maybe longer. The place is an institution in Sandusky, and for good reason. They have specials every day, and are quite yummy. Desserts are fantastic.

There are other decent restaurants in Sandusky, but Berardi's is my favorite.

I've never been there, but Marconi's in Huron, Ohio, is supposed to be good for upscale Italian. They have been in business many years as well, and they also have a website.

You might just do a search for restaurants in the area and see what captures your interest....

    1. It's an area known for it's fish, like walleye, perch, etc. Last time I was in the area I ate at a restuarant in Marblehead called Big Bopper's, and was pleased with my fish and a cup of their chili.

Hey, I just looked at Berardi's website, and unless I'm mistaken, it looks as if they have shortened their hours and are only open breakfast and lunch (6 am to 4 pm), or something like that. If you want to go there, better check their hours. They must have just implemented this because I was there in April and they were open till 8:00 then. I guess places are cutting back everywhere.... :-(

Huh? On the right side of their home page at www.sanduskyberardis.com their hours are shown as:

          Breakfast
          Monday - Saturday 6:30 am - 11:00 am
          Sunday 7:30 am - 1:30 pm

          Dinner
          Monday - Saturday 11:00 am - 8:00 pm
          Sunday 10:00 am - 1:30 pm

So it looks to me like dinner is served till 8 pm, six days a week, according to their website. I don't see where it says anything different...

Oooops, my bad. I super apologize, and I thank you for the correction. I'm glad you said something because I was going to be very disappointed if they had shortened their hours, not to mention perplexed. Don't know what I thought I was seeing... these damn cataracts :):)

No problem, glad we could figure it out! :)

The OP didn't say where she was from but I am a (rather new) seasonal resident of Port Clinton. We've been trying to find good restaurants over the past year - hit & miss. We like Jolly Roger in Pt Clinton for their perch & walleye - it was mentioned & reviewed in the June issue of Coastal Living magazine as well as the New Sandusky Fish Company in Sandusky. We have not been to the New Sandusky Fish Company yet but it is on our list. The Goat on Put in Bay has perch tacos if you're looking for walleye/perch. Nagoya in Pt Clinton is fun for faqmilies but the only problem is they overcrowd the tables and there is not much elbow wiggle room. Margarittaville off Rt 6 in Sandusky is fun for families but their food is not great - mostly Mexican. You'll find every kind of chain restaurant on the main drag of Sandusky but if you're looking for local fish, I'd recommend Jolly Roger.

Hi, I'm the OP, I live in Hamilton, (aka chain restaurant hell) just above Cincinnati. Not sure why you wanted to know, but thank you for the recommendations, the New Sandusky Fish Company sounds intriguing, we love fish and my husband especially loves walleye. I'm looking forward to trying it.

I've been to Jolly Roger in Port Clinton. The seafood is absolutely fresh and perfectly prepared (fried), and I enjoyed it. One thing to note is that it's not at all fancy - you stand in line to order like at a fast food place. It's very good for what it is; just don't expect a "white tablecloth" type restaurant with waiters etc.

              1. re: CurryLover

We ate lunch at the Goat on Put in Bay last weekend. My husband ordered the perch tacos they were AWESOME... I was only sorry I didn't order them, too. The only drawback of the Goat is that it doesn't have waterfront views and it might be a little too long of a walk from the main drag. We had our bikes & biked there after we docked at Oak Point. Afterwards we had a bottle of wine at the Heineman Winery a little ways south of the Goat. They have outdoor tables which is nice and relaxing on a sunny & nice day.

            2. Not sure how far you want to go, but I really like Chez Francois in Vermilion, OH. My husband and I were there for our anniversary a couple years ago and it was wonderful. Staff was excellent and very on-the-ball. The food itself did not disappoint. I had a fantastic salad and filet mignon, and dessert was very good, too. If you like French cuisine in an upscale (but not stuffy) atmosphere, I think you'll like this. It's about 1/2 hour east of Sandusky. http://www.chezfrancois.com/

I've been to Chez Francois several times and it's been excellent. You should be aware that the main dining room is fancy, with jackets required for gentlemen. They also have their Riverfront Cafe where casual attire is acceptable.

I don't see any mention of this on their website, but it's been true the last few times I was there, don't know if anything's changed...(?)

              2. I'm going to be heading out to the Port Clinton/Marblehead area soon. Any other recommendations?

LaHabana is in Marblehead if you like Cuban Food. Kind of unique for that area.

Bell Mell Tavern is in PC if you like pizza...they have something they call Pizzabellas which are pizzas on lavash bread - quite delicioius& unique.

CrossWinds in PC is good - never had a bad meal there.
