Silly Question…

  • 6

When I mentioned that I'm in need of a Bundt pan, my Mother-in-Law loaned me the pan that makes this cake:

I can’t find the pan on the website, the pan must be discontinued.

Anyway, I've never done a lot of cake baking, but my grandmother always told me that a Bundt pan needed the hole in the center for the batter to bake correctly. So, that leads me to ask, is this really a Bundt pan?

As I said in the title, I know it’s a silly question, but I need to know before I prepare all of these Bundt cake recipes I’ve saved up.

  1. That cake was made in a Wilton Sunflower Cake pan (available from Amazon and others). Bundt pans always have a "hole" in the center, and Nordic Ware makes many gorgeous ones.

Okay, so the sunflower cake pan is NOT a Bundt pan, right? I didn't think so, but my Mother-in-Law is pretty stubborn and insisted she knew what she was talking about...

Would it bake my Bundt cake recipes incorrectly?

Use a bundt pan for bundt cakes! These cakes are very deep, and by the time the center set in a non-bundt pan, the exterior would be at least over-baked, perhaps event burned. If you have an angel food pan of the correct volume, that would work, although your cake wouldn't be as pretty.

Okay. Thanks for clearing that up for me... I'll just have to purchase a Bundt pan before I can get started with all of those recipes.

I kind of *knew* it wasn't, but the Mother-in-Law was very insistent that is was indeed a Bundt pan. Since I'm inexperienced with cake baking, I figured I should just ask in case I was wrong...

          Thanks again. :)

You can bake a bundt recipe in any pan with a central tube, as long as the total volume will fit. You can also use two loaf pans for a bundt batter. Whenever you use a different size baking mold for any cake, you must of course check on it as it bakes, shortening or lengthening baking time as necessary.

Good to know. I don't have a single tube pan at present, but I already ordered a Bundt pan and angel food pan from Amazon.

Thanks for the tip about the loaf pans! I wish I would have known that much sooner, I'll have to try it out today.
