Manhattan Steaks

  • 9

Family arriving from abroad and they crave meat- steaks in particular. Can you recommend the best steaks or meat dishes in the area (Village is closest) ?

Am looking at Stripsteak and Minetta's tavern- but looking for the absolute best steaks, preferably not in a stuffy overhyped ultra pricey. Top 3 would be great!
THANKS TO ALL

  1. For steak:
    Minetta Tavern's Cote de Boeuf

    For non-steak, but beef-a-licious:
    Beef Cheek Ravioli at Babbo
    Oxtail Goulash at Wallse
Bone Marrow & Oxtail Marmalade at Blue Ribbon Bakery, followed by one of their steaks - IIRC, they have a filet, hanger and strip on the menu.

    2. With regard to Minetta Tavern, it is a well-known fact that the hoi polloi can only get reservations either very early (5:30 - 6 p.m.) or very late (after 11 p.m.). So, factor that into your decision about where to go.

Our favorite Manhattan steakhouse is Keens, which has been in its 36th St. location since 1885. Thus, in addition to superb steaks and chops -- including the legendary mutton chop -- there is the unmatchable charm of the Old NY ambiance.

Re: Minetta Tavern, OP may want to consider brunch.

Apparently the Prime Rib at brunch is essentially half of the côte de boeuf Minetta serves for dinner. (I've had a number of brunch dishes there but never ordered the steak.)

Keens is also an excellent choice.

Ditto what RGR said. Keens is a mecca for steaks plus it screams old NYC.

          1. My three Striphouse (bone in ribeye), Smith and Wollensky (not near the village though), and then Minetta Tavern. I would also put the Mutton Chop at Keens because I don't think you can get that anywhere else.

              1. I was keeping my suggestions to the Village - but if you're wandering further, then yeah, what everyone else said about Keen's.
