any morel mushrooms showing up?

ROCKLES May 12, 2011 03:19 PM

I have been to some farmers markets but have not seen them yet.
I have been mostly to the east bay markets-anyone know of any markets near So. San Francisco that has them?

Bought some on Saturday from the grocery store in Rockridge's Market Hall in Oakland. Pricey, though, at about $31/lb.

Morels? Yes! Lots of them in western red cedar burns 1 to 3 years old. The huge black one weighed 227grams which is very unusual. The other small shroom is a spring king (boletus rex veris) which are just getting started.

Wow, are you selling any :)
I'm sure you are keeping your spots secret.

Far West Fungi lowered there prices on Thursday on morels to $26/lb from $36/lb the week before. Still not as cheap as I'd like, but enough to add a side dish of fried morels to the steak I had already bought.

There were lots of huge ones in great shape at the Berkeley Bowl West yesterday. Biggest I've ever seen.

Yes. They have had great big clean ones for at least 2 weeks now.

$24.50 a pound today. Worth it.

Monterey Market had some a couple weeks ago. I know some people from the Mushroom Society of SF had a morel foray last weekend, but there weren't too many to be had. Maybe the rain this weekend will help.

MM didn't have any on Thursday and, in general, their mushroom selection is good.

They had them on Saturday and they were in good shape and not too dried out, for $36/lb. I bought about 1/3 of a pound to add to a springtime vegetable saute of favas, spring onions and English peas.

Berkeley Bowl has had them for weeks. And I have had a couple of bags of locally picked ones lately.
