Gastropub with Good Selection of On Tap Beers Allowing Table Reservations

mstinawu May 12, 2011 10:54 AM

I'm planning to get together a group of 10-15 people on a Saturday night for good snacks and a even better selection of on tap beers. However, I need to be able to make a table reservation. It can be anywhere in West LA, the South Bay or Hollywood. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

The beer selection is more important than the food, but food should be at least good!

I don't really know if they take reservations, you'd need to call and ask, but Tony's Darts away in Burbank (a little north of your stated range, but freeway close....) has a pretty big selection of beer----two or three dozen all made in California. They serve a few salads, but their food is primarily gourmet sausages, vegan and non. (The meat eaters in my group the time we went were blown away.) A pretty cool atmosphere that encourages lingering --including a big pile of board games. http://www.tonysda.com/beer.html

Funny they list their supposed competition on their website? http://www.tonysda.com/beerplaces.html

Not to sure about the food but Blue Palms Brewhouse in Hollywood has a good taplist.

I've had both of Blue Palms Brewhouse's burgers and a couple of other sandwiches that were very good and the tap and bottle lists are excellent!

Trying to remember how many taps Waterloo & City has going - around a dozen or more? Great local and European beers on tap, and a pretty huge selection of nice bottles as well. I think they score very high on the food scale, and they do take reservations, but please call in as early as possible as the weekends there are quite busy. I've never been there with a party of your anticipated size, but I recall someone posting that they have a room or section for larger parties as well.

Nice website. Unfortunately, no beer list on their website. Menu sounds good though! Maybe I'll cal to have them fax me their current on tap list..

Their beer list is included on the wine list. It's a good idea to call though as I don't know how often the site is updated.

I believe that Tony P's Dockside Grill in the Marina (nice patio with a view of the boats/water) has something on the order of 40 beers on tap. Take a look at the drinks section of their menu for more information.

Foodwise, W&C would be my top pick as well. There is a good selection of beers there but I am not sure about what is on tap. Two other options would be Westside Tavern and the new City Tavern in Culver City (which is supposed to have taps in each booth), but I don't know if City takes reservations.

Have you had a chance to try out City Tavern yet? I read about their tapped booths, but am wondering if there's a great selection of taps in general and am wondering about their food as well...

City Tavern place link with website and priced menus (the drinks menu shows 22 beers on tap)

No, I haven't but I believe it is from the folk behind Rush Street so one might need to adjust expectations accordingly. Nonetheless, the taps in the booths sounded like something which made it viable for the OP.

Thanks for Servorg diligently posting the link... I checked out their website and the beer list looks interesting. The food does as well. I never tried Rush Street - thumbs-up, down or neutral?

Not inedible by any means but less good than it should be--there are too many better options in the area (so, neutral). But, that having been said, they are trying something interesting with the beers on tap in the booths at City so maybe they are paying more attention to the food there as well.

It's a nice place to watch a ball game upstairs, which culver city doesn't really have otherwise. Nice atmosphere, couches ect; the food is okay and they have a decent beer selection.

We took the kids there and the burgers were fine, menu looks good, but don't know if the execution is always on target. But we had a decent meal there, no complaints. I'd go again.

I have not been there but here is a first hand report I got from some true beer geeks.
Overall for LA the beer prices are at their highest to laughable.
Note, they have dropped their prices since their opening but still remain on the high side.

The tap booths = novelty and the beer booth selection is pedestrian.

Thanks for the suggestion. I ended up throwing my boyfriend a surprise party there this weekend. Great beer selection, even better cheese and selection of pates and mousses. Appetizers and pizza were not very good granted we only ordered the tuna and chicken pizza but overall good time.. Lots of hipsters on view and all that good stuff. :)

Glad to hear that it was an overall good experience. Any beers stand out for you folks? I know beet salads have been beaten to death in a lot of restaurants, but we like theirs - basic but well-excuted. Also they're meat-intensive so if you return and like protein, try their burger, lamb, short ribs and steaks - not sure how consistently they offer the some menu items...

I am a little lost in this thread...which place did mstinawu actually go to ? Waterloo and City? I never cared for the pizza or main courses but liked most of the appy's and sides...and the bar/beer/scene is excellent.
