Restaurant with a nice view on Oahu

Looking for a reasonable priced restaurant with a view and good food. Coming to Oahu with someone who has never been and this is her request. Anywhere on the island is ok. Thanks for your help. Coming next week.

Are you a member of the BPOE (Elks)? Lodge No. 616 sits on Waikiki Beach with a varied dinner menu and a four-page bar menu with prices that are hard to beat anywhere on the island. And their mai-tais!! Served in a pint-sized beer glass for $5.00. They also have live entertainment that has always been impressive. Nowhere in Waikiki are you closer to the water from the bar than at the Elks Lodge. Sit on the outside deck and water laps up under foot. Love to get there in time to watch the sunset and follow all the outrigger canoe crews as they return to the canoe club next door. Ah, can't wait until next winter when our next trip is planned!!

Been here a few times as a guest but they are opened to the public. You definitely won't be disappointed. Please read the following review:

"The majestic "Million Dollar" ocean view from The Ka Ikena Restaurant of the Culinary Institute of the Pacific is surpassed only by the gourmet delights found on its menus. The Culinary Institute of the Pacific at Kapi`olani Community College has produced many of Hawaii's top chefs who have become world famous for their ability to blend classical Western cuisines with the unique ingredients and flavors of Asia and the Pacific. Lunch and Dinner are produced and served by students enrolled in its culinary and pastry arts program, . Named in honor of Queen Kapi`olani, the college and its culinary arts program maintains her legacy and her motto, "kulia i ka nu`u" (to strive for the highest) in all that we do. Great food at reasonable prices served in a beautiful atmosphere - that is the Ka Ikena Restaurant of the Culinary Institute of the Pacific!
Hours: Lunch: Tuesday - Friday: 11:00am - 1:30pm; Dinner: Tuesday - Friday: 5:30pm - 6:00pm when classes are in session. Check out our website for available dates."

great posting Clinton, and way too often overlooked. dinner service is closed for summer break now, open sometime in the fall, but lunch will be served June 2-24. Lunch generally runs $17-$22 including starter, beverage, and dessert.

We really enjoyed it the few times we've been there. Didn't even know it existed when we lived on 12th Avenue across Kapolono Park many years ago. Speaking of KCC, I've never been to their Farmers Market on Saturdays. Heard the food is excellent especially the charbroiled fresh abalone in the shell with ponzu sauce.

never had the abalone or the fried green tomatoes. the line of tourists is just too long. i think they must be listed by the japanese tour companies as a must do.

the school probably wasn't doing the meals back when you lived on 12th. and getting back to the original post... the view is east across kahala and out towards koko head. a beautiful view, but very different than the city view on the other side of kaimuki hill.

Might have to go to Haleiwa Joe's North Shore. Is there any good views of ocean here?

I prefer the view from Jamesons, but haleiwa Joes is ok. I feel the same about the food. Depending on the time of year (summer) there are great sunsets on the north shore (ie: sunset beach.) This year Lahaina Noon hits on May 26, 12:28 p.m. and July 16, 12:37 p.m., where the sun is directly overhead, virtually no shadows. Between those dates the Sun sets to the north, reaching a peak around June 21.

If you want to watch the sun setting off waikiki you are gonna have to wait till september or october

View? In order of my preferences: La Mer at Halekulani-go just before sunset. Michels' at Colony Surf. Hoku's at the Kahala. Top of Waikiki-for mostly city views. Too bad the Hanohano room closed-that was my favorite viewing spot. For more casual: the Moana hotel under the banyan tree or the Sheraton where you can dine from thier terrific buffet meals.

I agree that the view is great, but we were horribly disappointed there (review is probably still up, but you'd have to go back about 3 - 4 years). That said, going way-back, the previous restaurant in that site had been quite good, so Sarento's Atop the I, might well have improved, and then I'd gladly "eat my words."

We liked the restaurant atop the Ala Moana (name just is eluding me now), and both the food and service were very, very good. However, it has been as long (again, review should be on CH), and many respected folk have rather panned it, much more recently.

Now, you like Michel's at the Colony Surf (just down the block from the New Otani), as do many others. We were less than impressed, but I feel that we are in the minority here. Maybe just two bad nights, a couple of years apart?

I go along with Hunt for Hau Tree Lanai. The food is very good. Perhaps not Roy's or Alan Wong's, but still quite enjoyable, and the view can't be beat. You are virtually sitting on the beach under the spreading Hau Trees with all of Waikiki spread out in front of you. On top of which it may be the best al fresco dining around, although Roy's Hawaii Kai still does have a few outdoor tables, but while those face the ocean there is a noisy busy highway in between.

                  Socal,

My "go-to" great view and food places are likely not in the budget, BUT I have two for you. Each does have a "tourist" element, but with good food and views:

                  Shorebird Broiler at Outrigger Reef
Hau Tree Lanai at New Otani in San Souci Beach

My all time favorite, but at the very upper-end is La Mer. There are two great choices: Pacific view, or overlooking the House Without a Key, and the stage at the pool below (my favorite).

                  Enjoy and aloha,

                  Hunt

Hmmm. Actually staying at New Otani. Did not know how the food was at Hau Tree Lanai. Thanks for the tips.

It has now been several years, since my last visit, but over the years (maybe 5 trips there), the food have been very good to excellent. It is usually more simple, than say La Mer, or Chef Mavro, but good - just not quite so innovative. Wish that I had a recent trip to help you better.

                      Enjoy,

Thinking about going to HWAK for cocktails and to watch the sunset. Looking at Haleiwa Joes North Shore for dinner. Any comment on food or view? Thanks.

HWAK is GREAT for drinks and maybe some nibblies, but the food, and the wine list leave a lot to be desired. I would plan on dinner elsewhere, and enjoy it, for what it is. I would rather overlook it, from La Mer, and get better food and wines.

As for Haleiwa Joe's in Haleiwa (have not been to the one outside of Kaneohe), we were horribly underwhelmed, though many here, and on the North Shore sang its praises. Maybe we expected too much? Nothing was up to par, from service to food to wines. We left scratching our heads, wondering how things could go so very wrong. Still, many others here love it, and swear by it, so it must have just been their night from hell?

Over the years, Jameson's by the Sea, just up the road from Haleiwa Joe's, has been a winner. Yes, there is a toruistyyatmosphere, but the food has always been very good, with even a few great dishes. The service, while a tad "corporate feeling," has been more than adequate.

Wish that I had better news, but before you change plans, please wait for others to respond, especially as I seem to be "odd man out" on Haleiwa Joe's.

                        Enjoy,

                        Hunt
