[Seoul] Has anyone been to Jung Sik Dang?

Have any of the Korean chowhounders or other well travelled people on this board been to

I saw it recommended on the NYT and from the pictures it looks rather good. Thanks to Ripcurl's really useful trip report on his visit to Seoul and the other helpful comments we have planned a packed food itinerary but are wondering whether to replace ELBON with this.

Quite frankly the pictures from Jung Sik Dang look a step above?

Any thoughts?

  1. I like Jung Sik Dang too. It is led by a very talented chef, Jung Sik Lim. While it is one of the pioneering restaurants in Seoul, I prefer ELBON taste-wise . Chef Lim is a well experienced chef backed by overseas career. Although cooking tenure of a chef is not everything, it is one of barometers of judging the fundamentals of dishes created by the chef. Having said that, chef Choi at ELBON has longer experience than chef Lim. Chef Lim's dishes are full of interesting ideas and they are certainly eye-catching, but they look better than they taste. Don't give me wrong, his dishes are tasty and well prepared, but they seem to lack wow-impact taste-wise, if you know what I mean.

    Thus, at my first visit about two years ago I was very much impressed.

    On my second visit ten days later, I tried the same dishes and they were still good, but not quite as shocking as the first visit.

    I think that's because all the illusion of beautiful presentation had gone by that time and I was focusing on the taste only.

    So I would still recommend both Jung Sik Dang and ELBON.
    But if you have to try only one, IMHO, I would definitely choose ELBON over Jung Sik Dang.

      Many thanks for this Kosmose! I was actually trying to see if Chowhound had a message function so I could directly send you a message with this question! But you are so fast there is no need!

      Well I have booked ELBON already for Saturday night so that resolves it. Apart from that there is a tour with SeoulEats on Friday night and now I just need to choose places for Sat and Sun lunch. Shame it is such a short trip but I think I will def be back!

          Oh yes, I saw this article in Malaysia's The Sun newspaper last month. Piqued my interest about Elbon then!

              I've just relocated to KL (job posting) recently, and been reading the Sun each morning - they have good articles on food & restaurants not just locally, but also internationally. You may have noticed that my CH postings on this board has switched emphasis quite a bit to KL/Penang, though I stll go back to S'pore pretty often.
