how about 2941 in Falls Church, VA. Beautiful ambiance on a lake, you could drive right up to the bldg which is an advantage with the granparents. Food is great, a little pricey, but definitely good for birthday celebrations.

Rays the Classics is great. Might be a good choice. Double check though about their reservation policy (I've personally only walked in and have eaten at the bar).

The hanger steak is the awesome!

blueduck tavern, charlie palmer steak, bistro bis, and agree w/others on blacksalt. cityzen is gorgeous, but may be too over-the-top? central is nice, but too loud for grandparents.

What type of food do they like? Are the meat and potatoes type of people? Is Italian ok? Are they adventurous? It would help if you gave some details.

Here are some thoughts: Urbana (New American), Bibianna (Italian),or Blacksalt (seafood).

I would add 701, Cashion's, Dino, DC Coast and second Blacksalt, our parents always love it.

What type of food and all that might help narrow it down for others to comment on.

Yeah, first thing that comes to mind for grandparents - quiet but not tired or sleepy.
