Eeep! Out-of-Towner: Need To Find This Restaurant For My Parent's Anniversary Tomorrow (Calgary)

cloudshoveller May 10, 2011 02:47 PM

Due to uncontrollable circumstances, I cannot join my parent's in Calgary for their 40th anniversary tomorrow. We will celebrate together at another time.

However, I am looking to find a restaurant I can send them to tomorrow. I recently read a magazine article about a restaurant that the author raved about. The food was made from a lot of locally sourced food and also featured nice choices of game.

It looked like it was located in an old house and I think it was on the outskirts of the city not in the actual city itself.

Can anyone help me out given that (very limited) information?

I am also open to other suggestions of restaurants with places to sit outside that have really interesting food. My parent's are as at home in a hole-in-the-wall as they are in a fine dining establishment and have eaten in China or France. So they aren't food snobs they just like good food in interesting places.

I usually hang out on the BC boards -being from there - but I have found all Chowhounds to be stellar folks, so I thank anyone in advance for considering my request for assistance! Apologies for the short notice :)

I wonder if you are thinking about The Ranche? It is still in the city proper but looks like it is in the wilderness. As you can't see or hear the city from the property.

I had my wedding reception there recently. Highly recommended.

Perhaps it might have been Rouge?

I think Cilantro would be a lovely intimate setting. The restaurant itself is like a house, but they also have a lovely enclosed patio--perfect for the beautiful weather we'll have this week.

River Cafe is a Calgary institution. With its park-like setting along the river, your parents could take advantage of the warmth and sunshine with a stroll. I should say however, that if they are not comfortable walking far, that River Cafe will not be suitable--it is right in the middle of Prince's Island Park. Locally sourced ingredients, game, etc. Also looks like a house!

I apologize for my delay in thanking you for your assistance, fellow Hounds! Yes – Office Broccoli – it was The Ranche I was looking for. Thank you so much for supplying the info!

It ended up being everything I was looking for and more. I cannot wait to visit Calgary and attend The Ranche myself.

Thank you also -aktivistin – for your suggestions. Having lived in Calgary previously, I agree wholeheartedly with your suggestions of Cilantro and The River Café. I have not had the pleasure of dining at Rouge, but it looks very nice. Do you like it?

Thanks again SO much for your help in making a special occasion memorable.
