Choice of Fish Restaurant!

Looking at going to one of the following for a dinner for 2 with a friend while in San Francisco for work. Choosing amongst Cafe De Le Presse, Farallon, Swell, and Scoma's. All given as recommendations from our concierge at the Orchard Garden Hotel. Anyone have thoughts on our best bet? Want a place with good, healthy food and an atmosphere where we can talk and catch up. Thanks

  1. Among those, I'd go to Farallon. I don't think of Cafe de le Presse as a fish restaurant, though I'm sure they have a couple of fish entrees. Scoma's is very touristy, noisy and doesn't take reservations. I'm not familiar with Swell. Farallon does specialize in seafood, is relatively quiet and right now is getting very good reviews.

Swell is the seafood place in the old Bar Crudo. There have been a few reports here.

    2. Can I add Cafe Claude to this list? Where does that fit in? Thanks.

Cafe Claude is good if you are looking for French bistro food, but it's not a seafood restaurant like Farallon.

      2. Scoma's does take reservations and yes, it is touristy, but it actually has fresh, delicious seafood unlike many of its touristy neighbors (although it still is overpriced).

Scoma's is more traditional straightforward seafood, Farallon is more refined. Both are pricey. I absolutely love the interior/feel of Farallon, whereas Scoma's feels almost archaic.

Scoma's takes reservations? Their website says it's first come, first served only.

        2. Thanks guys! Unless I hear otherwise, I will be going to Farallon. If anyone has any strong suggestions for other places feel free to share! Thanks again....

          1. Among those, easy choice to go to Farallon*... But if I were your concierge I would have said Ame (with the caveats that it might be hard to get into and it is definitely one of the pricier restaurants in town, though it isn't ridiculous.)

*I've not been to Swell; in fact, this is the first I'm even hearing of it.
