Sultan in North Wales - a couple of highlights but overall not great
I had a craving for Indian food last night and apparently Amans' is not open on Monday, we were lazy, didn't feel like travelling far so we went to Sultan in North Wales
I was a fan of theirs YEARS ago when they were in the shopping center by 5 points back when Weiss' had their super market, where Lowes is now
the place on 63 in Lansdale/North Wales isn't what I remembered
the decor - tacky, lacking, and it felt a little dirty
The service was timely but the matire'd continued to try to up-sell us, more on that later
What we ate:
Appetizer - we ordered a MIX APPETIZER BASKET FOR TWO (pasted from their website)
the matire'd standing next to the waiter, asked us if we'd like to try a "special" appetizer, we agreed, but then had to make it clear to the waiter that we wanted that INSTEAD of the mixed basket
the "special" appetizer was the sish kebab, in a tomato-ey/spicy sauce with peppers and onions, only it seemed almost as if it was leftover from the lunch buffet, totally over cooked and a hot mess of indistinguishable items, the kebab was falling apart and it was swimming in grease, "freshened" up with a couple of raw green peppers. We both ate about two bites of it and had enough
for dinner, my husband ordered the tandoori mixed grill and I orderd Chicken Bhagari
when we ordered, the maitre'd asked my husband what kind of bread he would like. I noticed on the menu that bread was ala carte, I don't know that he did or not... I was dying for papadam, so I orderd that, (the papadam was a little salty, but I liked it!) then the maitre'd asked my husband if we wanted a bread basket to go with our meal, I spoke up and politely said no thank you
(how much did this guy think we were going to eat?)
the fish, boneless chicken breast and shrimp on the mixed grill were all nicely cooked and the fish was the star of the plate,
the chicken tikka (on the bone) was dried out as was the piece of sish kebab
my chicken dish tasted delcious and had a nice balance of flavor and texture, the chicken was tender and juicy, though the rice they served it with was 'flat' and seemed dried out and by the anemic look of the peas in it I started to wonder if that wasn't a lunch buffet leftover too
overall, I probably won't go back. I'll just decide that if I want Indian on a Monday, I'll wait till the next day to get it or go somewhere else.

Yes, we've been disappointed several times and will not return. If you're going to eat in that area the new Vietnamese please, Pho and More is quite good. While the chargrilled beef is better at Saigon on Main, everything else is better at Pho and More and the service is improving steadily.

Wow that sucks cgarner. We need a good Indian restaurant in the Montgomeryville area! My friend is exploring vegetarian dishes so I am eyeing Saffron for a return visit soon. We probably would have gone there last night but we are waiting until my friend John can join us because we want a table for three. The deuces there seem too packed in but maybe if we can get a nice window table we could look out at the pedestrians.
Sultan sounds claustrophobic. The Wegmans in warrington offers second floor dining so it is a great place to people watch too if you score a table near the railing. Sometimes they run out of the Indian fare early there though.
I am feeling especially smug because I FINALLY scored some frozen naan at TJ's, both garlic and regular. I just stared at it for a few seconds, thinking such legendary stuff must surely be a mirage. The naan is even better than foretold. -
Just wanted to say that on our last visit we had many of the same issues as you noted. Not worth the effort to detail all the badness, you did it nicely. Although we had NO highlights. Wegman's Indian Bar or Sultan? When also considering price and time and the annoying people at Sultan It is Wegman's by a length! Also Wegman's is cleaner, nicer and offers a better venue, yes I know that sounds crazy, but the Sultan is dark, dingy and feels unclean.
