Dining Room at the Modern?

Has anyone been recently? Any hits (or misses) on the new spring menu?

  1. We were just there last night and had an absolutely stunning dinner! Everything -- and I do mean everything! -- was a not-to-be-missed!

      Thanks, RGR.

Love the pictures, as always. Tried hard to get an EMP reservation for next week, but The Modern is our 2nd favorite place in the city to celebrate.

Glad to see the ice cream cones have made a re-appearance...they were absent when I was there in February.

You're welcome, doubledoc! Glad you enjoy the photos. :)

This was only the third time we've been to The Modern Dining Room, and we left saying to each other that we must try to go more often. Kreuther's cuisine really is amazing!

Though we were told when we reconfirmed that they would be setting up for a special event in the Sculpture Garden, they didn't mention anything about being subjected to a technicolor light show, which was a minor annoyance with regard to taking photos. And there was still the issue of noise filtering in from the Bar Room. However, I've been told by a reliable source that they are going to close up the wide opening at the back which is a big factor. Obviously, they've finally gotten the message that a restaurant of such high quality should not have a high noise problem. Why it was ever designed that way is a mystery to me.

One other thing we noticed. Though there is a jacket required policy, many men were not wearing one. It seems to us if you are not going to enforce that policy, why bother having it?

Great report and pics as always RGR. I have dined at the Bar Room but have not yet been to the Modern Dining Room. This report definitely piques my interest. While I had some service issues at the Bar Room as you know, the food was very very good.

I am sure the Dining Room provides a great experience. And I agree about the jacket polic. If you are not going to enforce it then just get rid of it.

Thanks for the compliments, steakrules! You really should give The Modern Dining Room a try. But I would suggest waiting until they close up that opening as I'm sure once that's accomplished, it will be a more serene -- though hardly funereal -- experience.

With regard to the jackets situation, I just called to ask about it and was informed that they are no longer required. The woman I spoke to said the policy was abandoned about a year ago. That will certainly be an incentive for us to go there more often.

Thanks for the jacket info. I wonder if we will start seeing the no jacket policy become the trend at the few remaining jackets required places. Whose left? Per Se. Daniel. Jean Georges. La Grenouille and Le Bernardin? Anyone else

Acc. to Zagat: Carlyle, Four Seasons, Le Cirque, Le Perigord, River Cafe, and 21 Club. 21 Club was the last to drop the policy requiring a tie as well just a couple of years ago.

Some private clubs like the Union League and Lotos still require jackets for members and their non-member guests as well.

    2. Here are a few of my favorites (sorry for the caps but I'm pasting from the online menu):

      Macerated Cucumber and Cumin

Smoked Bacon, Granny Smith Apple, Beluga Lentils and Sage

White Coco Bean Purée and Harissa Oil

Black Trumpet Marmalade, “Fleischschneke” and Banyuls Jus

Mango Ravioli, Coconut-Lemongrass Tapioca and Ten Flavor Sorbet

      Raspberry Sorbet

The sepia risotto is simply amazing. Had it last time....

      2. We're going for our wedding anniversary this week and I can't wait. My birthday dinner last year was one of the best of my life (which has happily involved a large number of excellent meals).
