What places do you love in Montgomery County that appear to be in danger of closing?

Terrie H. May 9, 2011 08:19 PM

A friend mentioned that one of her local favorite restaurants was empty when she was there this weekend and was worried that they would close. I started to think of some of the little places I've loved that seem to be empty too often, and then they've been gone. It occurred to me that we could take advantage of this forum to try and give a boost to some good restaurants that might be struggling and are worth trying to save.

Any recs for struggling places that you think deserve our help?

Spice Xing in the Rockville Town Square.

Everything on Gibbs St. just doesn't get the same walk-up traffic that the places on Maryland Ave. do, and they're all the way at the south end.

I don't know if it's in danger of closing, but Mia's pizza on Cordell in Bethesda is excellent. 4 new pizza places with, it looks like more capital, look set to give it a run.

I like Fresh Grill in Bethesda, but I consider it a good night for them if there's one or two other groups in there when I am there.

I expect Pizzeria Damarco will compete with Mias when it opens, but what else? The Haven Bros. place?

I second the Fresh Grill rec. I think their burger is comparable to Ray's Hellburger, but BGR seems to be getting all of the traffic.

I third Fresh Grill. Everything I've had there has been done to a turn. I don't understand the paucity of customers either.

I fourth Fresh Grill. Great food, no customers.

I was very underwhelmed by the fresh grill burger and IMHO it is not in the same league as the Ray's Hellburger

@Doh, in addition to those 2, I was thinking Matchbox on Rockville Pike and Pete's Apizza and Vaipano, too

I've gotta try fresh grill one day!

I doubt that Matchbox is in any danger of closing. They seem to be packed.

I think MoCoMe was referring to Doh's comment about Pizzeria Damarco (and thus Matchbox and Pete's) being competition for Mia's, not that they were in danger of closing.

I absolutely 5th Fresh Grill. DELICIOUS. And the owners are super-nice, and really aim to please. I want them to succeed.

I want to add that I'm worried about York Castle ice cream on Hungerford in Rockville. It opened over a year ago and I never see anyone there. It is such incredible ice cream and I don't want them to go away. Please visit them - they are between Cuban Corner and Cameron's across from Montgomery College.

Second this. Best ice cream in the DC area. (My plan if I ever have to quit my job is to see if I could open an ice cream stand for them somewhere more convenient to Bethesda.)
