Can anyone help with suggestions? I'm mostly interested in the style of Vietnamese food, not the decor or chi-chi factor. I'm also willing to drive so restaurants in the OC or San Gabriel are also welcome.

Thanks.

If you want the best Vietnamese style lobster you have to do Newport Seafood. The house lobster is unreal. Price per pound is almost a steal, you through in some beef bo loc, sauteed spring peapods, and some deep fried tofu and you win!!! Check it out in the San Gabriel Valley.

One in San Gabriel Valley and one in the OC. take your pick!
The house crab is exactly the same as the "secret" crab at Crustacean. but most people at Newport Seafood prefer to go with the lobster (ranging from 4-7 pounds)

Crustacean is horrible. The food is terrible. The service is rude. Hoping for a pleasant dining experience at Crustacean defies logic.

I like Lee Kam Kee in Alhambra on Valley near Fremont. Beer crab, spicy tofu, green papaya salad, French-style beef, and good pho, too.

you have to go to newport seafood restaurant and get the lobster. this is much better than crustacean. no snotty service. go to the one in rowland heights because the place is bigger and the parking is slightly easier.

Good that you're trying to AVOID Crustacean already -- so a couple of suggestions for you, all in OC unfortunately. S Vietnamese Fine Dining is a "nice" Viet place (actual tables with linen and stuff). If you're into the seafood, try Boiling Crab in (I think) Garden Grove -- I don't have the "town line" down yet... and for another Viet experience in a nicer sit-down place, try Brodard Chateau.

S Vietnamese Restaurant, per Das Ubergeek above, at 545 Westminster Mall Drive in Westminster, 714.898.5092 is probably the fanciest looking place, and when SIV reviewed it on February 22, 2006, she gave it two stars! Probably a bit less expensive than the Crusty thing in Beverly Hills, yet the food will be much more authentic.

Brodard Chateau is a nice sit-down place, but I'm not sure if they do any crab/lobster dishes.

I like Newport Seafood (corner of First and Newhope) in OC, as well as Kim Su restaurant (Bolsa/Ward) for their lobster/crab dishes. The house special style isn't exactly like crustacean, but it's very good. You can get this style lobster at various other restaurants in Little Saigon, like Seafood Cove, Seafood Paradise, and Royal Capital seafood.
