Having a craving for a fantastic juicy burger in the neighborhood. Thinking about 5 napkin or Big Nick's. Opinions appreciated and any other suggestions.

There is the obvious choice of Shake Shack (although I still haven't been). Nice Matin also has the original 5 napkin burger (although I don't know if it is better/worse/as good as 5 Napkins').

      I vote for 5 Napkins

Fairway Cafe has my fave burger. Mitchel London rocks.

        Shake Shack.
5 Napkin is good, but it can be overkill -- Is it necessary to stick a steak knife in the burger??
Big Nick's.... only if it's 3 AM and you need something to soak up the remnants of a long night of bar hopping.

I like the burger at 5 Napkin although I ask them to strip away much of the extras like cheese so that the beef comes through. I personally think Shake Shack is practicing mass hypnosis because I think their burgers are way over-rated. I still mourn the loss of Happy Burger. Now that was a diner with a great burger grill that was lost to redevelopment several years ago.

Thanks for the advice. Do you need a reservation for 5 napkin or do you think a 4 top can walk in around 7pm on a Friday night? Shake Shack is also on my list as I have never been there and I know people rave about it. Keep the ideas coming as I am willing to travel up to about 112th street on Broadway or vacinity.

You will need at reservation at that time. Enjoy.

I am a fan of Shake Shack and 5 Napkin (and Nice Matin). I do like Fairway but a real surprise contender is PD O'Hurleys West (the one closer to West end on 72nd). Monday is a build your own night for extra fun

Well now, hang on a minute.

I agree that Shake Shack is great for a quick Shack-Attack and the fries are excellent. But we're talking Best on the Upper West, which is a big claim. And no-one has even mentioned Cafe Luxembourg?

I think Cafe Lux is the only really serious contender for 'Best'. It has been the gold standard of UWS burgers for years, and it's still right up there. Easily a contender for best burger in Manhattan too.

It's a grown-up's burger, on a par with Odeon and Balthazar (there is - or was - some shared DNA among these three, so it's no accident)
