Carmel and Big Sur- with new baby

Hi Chowhounds,

Hoping you can help, my husband and I are going to Big Sur for our 3rd anniversary next weekend. We are bringing our new little baby (new like 8 weeks). He is very quite and pretty much just chills in his car seat. I've scoped out Big Sur Bakery, which totally looks like our style, wondering if you can recommend other like places that would be baby friendly (nothing too fancy or small, but also nothing that resembles a kiddie playground!). We love organic, farm to table type eats- we live in LA and our faves to give you some direction are Gjelina, Animal, Red Medicine, Blue Plate, and Osteria Mozza

Thanks!!
Annette

  1. I'd consider lunch as your main meal...because if the weather is nice, you can eat out of doors, which I think is more baby friendly. The outdoor decks at Ventana and Nepenthe are both fun...with the food at Ventana being considerably nicer. Also, in Carmel, Cantinetta Luca is a terrific Italian restaurant which has a small outdoor patio.

    1. In Big Sur, Wild Coast Restaurant at Treebones Resort offers many things from their garden, and it's really the best part of their menu, IMHO. Mr. scarmoza and I had the lovely Garden Party Salad - fresh garden lettuces, nasturtium flowers, cucumbers, and honied sunflower seeds (all from the garden). The stuffed artichokes were scrumptious and the fava risotto was creamy and loaded with baby fava beans. We also ordered the filet mignon but were both underwhelmed by it and wished we had ordered more items from the garden instead. Their wine list is all from the Santa Lucia and Santa Cruz Mountain Ranges. Beers on tap were Anchor and Firestone. Coffee was from Carmel Roasting Company.

The garden gate is open to guests and the grounds are a beautiful place for a stroll. It's a very casual place but you might want to call ahead for dinner reservations (they ask all guests to make reservations so they can prepare for dinner each evening). We were there during the road closures on HWY1, so there weren't many visitors anywhere in Big Sur at that time. Still, the restaurant had it's share of guests but it wasn't crowded at all.

The road closure just south of Gorda on HWY1 is currently still in place (5/9/11).

thanks everyone! I think we are going to cut over in Cambria and take the detour from there. We are staying north of the closure so I think we will be good :) Ill report back on the eats!

        2. Just as an update: Big Sur was fantastic! Lunch was def our main meal as many places would not be appropriate for us with a little guy. We ate breakfast twice at Carmel Belle in Carmel- amazing food! Big Sur Bakery was just as good as everyone raved, delicious baked goods and amazing chard quiche as well as yummy sandwiches on their own bread. We went to Nepenthe for the views, the burger was just ok, but really its for the ambience not the food. We stopped by Post Ranch, which if we were alone we would have done as everyone says the food is exquisite, but seemed a little snobby to tell you the truth and we have been to some of the most amazing places so we skipped it.
          Great weekend all in all!
          thanks for all your suggestions!

The food is wonderful @ Sierra Mar @ the Post Ranch Inn and the views are absolutely stunning. We were in the area this past Sat. and enjoyed a lovely lunch at Fandango in Pacific Grove and Anton & Michel in downtown Carmel. Such a beautiful area to spend time in! ;)

Although Anton & Michel had been outstanding in the past, we had two very mediocre dinners there about 2 years ago, and have not returned. Has it returned to its prior glory?
