Island Hut in Wheaton

Checked out the latest new place in the treasure trove that is Wheaton. Island Hut took over the space in the dinner-like Irene's on University just east of Georgia.

Excellent chicken lunch at Chowhoundish prices. I had the curry while Mrs. Repete has the Brown Stew chicken. The curry was very nice. Those of you who like a lot of heat might want to let them know. Brown Stew was excellent as well.

Lots of care put into the meals. Rice was nicely spiced. Cabbage side was perfect. We brought home a piece of coconut cake that we'll have later.

Good food, very nice people. It's a crowded scene of good-eating in Wheaton and this is a good addition. I hope they do well.

The OP was mid-May, then Tom Sietsema wrote his Post review of Island Hut for his May 25 First Bite column.

Guessing so. I didn't ask the specific island and most of my experience is in V.I,, but I know Brown Stew chicken is often identified with Jamaica. The sodas were Jamaican but that seems to be the case in a lot of Caribbean places.

I chatted with the owner a few weeks ago as we were coming out of New Kam Fong... yes, Jamaican.
There was an article on it last week in the Gazette: http://gazette.net/stories/05112011/b...

We had dinner there on Saturday night--it was yummy. Hubby had the curried goat, which was outstanding--buttery meat, flavorful sauce. Cabbage and rice also tasty. I had the curried shrimp, which I enjoyed as well. It's a casual place with friendly service and the food is definitely made with care. This place is definitely also going to be on our carry out list.
