I think you're talking about the 13 yr old Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye, not the regular Pappy Van Winkle line of rye. The VWFR rye is liquid caramel gold. It's almost impossible to find at a bar, let alone a store. We used to troll the liquor stores in Brooklyn looking for it. This was at the beginning of the rye "boom". Now, it's almost or probably impossible to find locally.

Thanks for the rec. Had planned to swing by Astor tomorrow as it was.....Agree on the Pappy 15 rye over the 20 and 23. The 13 VWFR rye however, is in another stratosphere...Rittenhouse Rye is pretty widely available around NYC. Just saw it at Warehouse Liquors on Broadway near Astor Pl. for about $21, but I've seen it around for less than $20. It's gotten a sort of cult following around town it seems, so places are raising prices. Old Potero you can find here and there. It's not good, but I suppose this assertion won't be enough to deter you. I don't know about the other two. Rittenhouse is worth carrying a couple few bottles back if you can't get it where you are.

My experience has been that hard liquor (and maybe all alcohol) is distributed by state. So if Pappy is available anywhere in Michigan, then any Michigan liquor store would be able to order it for you. If Pappy is not available in Michigan, then no Michigan store could order for you.
I know, because some wine and liquor is not available to me in Massachusetts, but it is available in NY.
Sherry-Lehmann is one of the biggest wine/spirit stores in NY. I would advise you to call them and ask them if these spirits are available in NY. If so, you can probably order them and pick them up there. (They can't ship hard liquor out of state.)

The problem with Pappy Van Winkle is that it only comes out 2x a year and some stores are lucky to get 1-2 bottles, total. It's not really something you can order. They do ship to distributors in Michigan according to their Facebook page (someone spotted it on April 25).

The NYC stores (Park Ave, Union Square, Astor, Beekmans) should have gotten theirs at the end of April; it's likely all gone by now.
A lot of the time the Pappy doesn't even hit the shelves but goes to loyal customers/people who ask. A friend who lives in Brooklyn won the "right" to buy a bottle of the 20 yr old bourbon via a lottery at his local store last year.

re: kathryn
Thanks for the info, I have a bourbon guy who I get Pappy 15 from, I bought the last 3 from the spring shipment. Rumored to be the last of the SW Distillery barrels. If you see any I highly reccomend it. We actually do have PVW still on the shelves a few 20's and quite a few 23. I prefer the 15 to both including the ORVW23. The rye he sold out in November, and am kicking myself for not getting some, but if someone saw it on a dusty store in chinatown, I would be interested. The specific whiskeys I'm looking for are the basic Rittenhouse, Old Potero, Whistle Pig, and Four Roses Marrrige. None are available in Michigan. I'm late to the rye banwagon, because I have always prefered the wheated bourbon, but want to explore it more than the sole bottle of Sazarac I own. Thanks for the info.

Good luck on the Pappy! I haven't been able to find any here (the rye or the bourbons) from the Spring allotment. You'll probably have more luck in a less populated area, maybe suburban NJ, but it might already be too late since apparently the spring allotment was pretty small.
But Astor Wines has an excellent selection of whiskey. It's in Noho, so not too far from Soho. Ask for Stephanie, she rocks.
