rifkind81 May 6, 2011 07:57 AM

Anyone know of a Whole Foods or fishmonger with cleaned soft shells for sale?

I saw soft shell crabs at Eataly for $8.80 each last night.

FYI, Whole Foods doesn't carry live crabs or lobsters. They don't consider it humane.

FreshDirect has them for $3.99 each now.

Fresh Direct has them cleaned for delivery. They are pretty expensive @2 for $11. But I am going to give them a try since getting to Chinatown seems like a trek.

Lobster place has great quality seafood.

Citarella is a good option. As is Pisacane. All good fishmongers will clean the crabs for you, and should do so. Almost seven dollars per small crab is very expensive. Its still early in the season and prices are still high.

Yeah, they're not cheap, but Lobster Place at least has pretty good sized ones.

Just bought some yesterday in Chinatown on Grand & Chrystie. $20 a dozen $12 for 6. Not sure of the name of the spot, but on the Southwest corner. You can't miss it.

Pisacane the fish monger along 1st Ave (near 52nd) had them when I dropped by last Saturday. Cleaned.

Yep, bought some a few days ago from the Lobster Place. They weren't cleaned, but they happily cleaned them for me. They are $6.95 each.

Have you seen a place for tips at Lobster Place? The service there is so first-rate and I want to tip them when they clean stuff for me. But I haven't been able to find a tip jar. The tip jars at the cashier are shared by the cashiers only, not the fish guys.

No, I haven't. I hadn't ever really thought about it before, but you're right that they are always so friendly and efficient, particularly when I ask them to do something specific. I think the guy who makes the sushi has a tip jar, but I don't know whether or not that gets shared with the others.

no need for a jar, just hand them a fiver

                            Curious to hear why.

Citarella has soft shells too, at the moment.

i think the ready to cook seafood is crap. for example a mahi mahi wrapped in bannana leaf had no flavor at all and was weighed down by pointless slices of bell pepper. a coconut crusted mahi mahi was similarly inept. their new england clam chowder is unpleasantly heavy on cream.

Big fan of Lobster Place in Chelsea Market, especially the ready to cook fish. Their miso glazed black cod is delicious, as is the salmon. Planko covered flounder, salmon burgers, and seafood sausages are also very good. Sushi is always fresh and the crab soup, manhattan chowder, and lobster bisque are very good. Along with Citarella, it's my regular go-to fish market.

The fishmonger at any Whole Foods will clean the crabs for you... if they are available. I haven't seen any aside from Fairway and Chinatown for a while.
