In praise of Korzo Haus

There is something special about Korzo Haus and I want to encourage other Chowhounds to try it. It is a tiny, newish restaurant on East 7th St that serves variations on Eastern European comfort foods. I often eat there alone at the "bar" that faces the kitchen, and everyone is so friendly, from cooks to other solo dining patrons.

A lot of people go for their burger and beer special, $10 and served until 7pm. I'm usually not a burger person- Korzo Haus is the only restaurant that makes a burger I like. Instead of a bun, it's wrapped in Hungarian fried dough (I think it's called langos). They use unusual ingredients like juniper berries in the Slav burger. They are all delicious.

I've tried a variety of the ever-changing side dishes. There's the hearty and filling halušky and bryndza, which is similar to spaetzle with bacon, chives, and a cheese similar to feta. One time I had a rather spectacular salad, which I think was listed on the menu as something mundane like "green salad." But it turned out to be an elaborate and lovely dish of mixed greens, sunflower seeds, intricately sliced green apples, and a fantastic mustard dressing, all served over a dollop of feta. Just beautifully plated and a great combination of flavors.

The cooks are not afraid of strong flavors- think mustard, sauerkraut, juniper berries, etc. I saw a comment on yelp saying they use too many strong and pungent ingredients. I could not disagree more! I hope they never tone down their flavors. They're unique and exciting.

They always come up with new and creative ideas that never fail to satisfy my craving for comfort food. Everything is really fresh (and locally sourced, I think?) and the menu changes daily. One time I was served a tiny dish of astoundingly delicious pickled celery because they had run out of cucumbers and decided to create something else. That pickled celery was so memorable that I literally told friends about it. I'm considering going back to ask if they will let me purchase an entire jar of it.

I actually found out about Korzo Haus on Chowhound. I think I had posted asking for places where I could get great Eastern European food and beer, and somebody recommended this place to me. While Korzo Haus is not as beery as what I sought in my initial request (only two beers on tap) it has fast become one of my favorite restaurants in the city!

  1. I like this review a lot, Brighton. I'm bookmarking Korzo Haus to try. Does it lean towards any particular Eastern European cuisine (Hungarian, Polish, Ukrainian)?

      The owner is Hungarian. Some of the dishes are explicitly Hungarian while others are standard, but well made central European.

      They originally opened in south Park Slope in Brooklyn and opened the Manhattan branch more recently. They're a favorite of mine.

          2. Respect! Korzo Haus is really good food. I don't go there as much as I should, but when I do, I always have a great meal. The chef, Steven is so Amped about food & it really shows. My favs are the deep fried Korzo burger (obviously) & the chicken liver mousse. An excellent addition to the East Village.

            1. We went on Saturday and really enjoyed it. The mixed salad was very good - the pickled rhubarb was an especially nice touch. My husband had the Slav burger which suited him down to the ground, I had the sausage platter, ditto, and we shared some German potato salad. The organic ale was great and well-priced at $16 the pitcher. Service was also very charming. Most successful lunch, I hope they prosper in this location.
