Dinner for visiting friend - have been to Little Owl, Lupa, need similar recs please.

Hi

I have a friend coming to town and need to make a reservation for late May. I tried ABC Kitchen and Maialino, but they only have 5pm and 11pm seatings available. I've taken her to Little Owl and Lupa, and she loved both. Want to try somewhere she hasn't been; my other ideas are Red Cat or The Harrison, but wondering if anyone can recommend anything else? We want somewhere delicious, but sort of casual (not fancy white table cloth.) Price range can go up to mid - high $20s for an entree.

Thanks!

  1. The only thing not available at Maialino if you eat at the bar (or front area) is the maialino itself. So I wouldnt give up on taking her there... we've never had a problem getting bar seats & its a fine place to have dinner. Hearth might be interesting as well, especially if you get there when seats are available at the pass (by the kitchen).

    1. I would suggest Aldea. The Portuguese-inspired contemporary American cuisine is seriously delicious (the signature arroz de pato is not-to-be-missed!), and it's the kind of casual place you are looking for both with regard to ambiance and price point. In addition to table seating, there are 6 seats at the counter in front of the open kitchen.

You don't say exactly when in May you want to reserve, but if it's the last week, a quick check of OpenTable shows lots of availablility right now. If you are interested, it would be best to reserve asap because Aldea is very popular, and those openings could quickly disappear.

Btw, we've not been to The Harrison, but we had dinner once at Red Cat, and I was not impressed with the food, i.e., o.k. but nothing to rave about.

      1. Some ideas:
        Perilla
        Po
        Hearth
        Peasant

All of these take reservations and will probably have some decent times left.

Babbo isn't going to be any easier to get into than ABC Kitchen and Maialino.

inoteca Tribeca? I don't recall a location there, unless you meant Corsino?

Mas' menu has entrees in the $30s, seems too high for this request.

Blue Hill is also in the same price range and will be just as difficult to book as ABC Kitchen & Maialino.

Morini books up rather quickly as well -- I just put in 2 for 8:00 PM on Saturday, May 28, 2011 and only got 6:45pm and 9:30pm.

BLT Market's menu also looks too expensive.

The Modern -- did you mean the Dining Room or the Bar Room? The Dining room has a $98 prix fixe menu and is a fancy white table cloth kind of place. The Bar Room might work better.

              2. Try Manzo at Eataly. If you can't get a reservation for a table then eat at the bar. We did and it was great.

                1. Thanks again! Will run these by her. And wondering what people are thinking about Cookshop these days? I haven't been there for dinner in a while, and heard it's sorta gone downhill.
