Where To Buy Sugar Cane Stalks in San Gabriel/Alhambra/Monterey Park Area?

A little background -

I like to bbq. I sometimes bbq with sugar cane stalks. Yes, you heard that right, I bbq with sugar cane stalks sometimes. I used to grow sugar cane but it started to get all over and looked like a mess so I took it out. Big mistake. So now I have to buy sugar cane and it's hard to get. I am going to start growing it again but I need a stalk first to start growing it and I want a bunch so I can bbq chicken with it. I lay charcoals down and lay the cane on top of it and it smokes it.

I always hear people say go to a Mexican market or Asian market and find it. Well I've done that, no luck. I recall at the downtown area about Alameda and Olympic sometimes you find it but if I can find it in the MP/Alhambra/SG area I'll prefer that. Even in downtown in the produce area they don't have it sometimes.

I saw some at the Alhambra farmer's market but it was 3 bucks for 1/3 of a stalk. That's way too much money. Sure I could buy one and start it in a pot of soil to start growing it but I feel ripped off paying $3 for 1/3 a stock. That stuff grows like weeds once you start it so the grower probably has tons of it so I think he's over charging.

At the South Pasadena farmers market a guy used to sell some growing in a pot and I bought it and tried to grow it but I neglected it and it died. Before that as noted above I used to grow in successfully. I have not seen the old man at the South Pas FM lately so I can't buy a pot of it from him.

So bottom line have any of you seen it sold at any stores, doesn't matter American, Mexican, Asian stores, any stores? I need to buy some to bbq then grow so I have more to bbq with.

Thank You

Hawai'i Supermarket has it from time to time. As does Arcadia Market.

Thanks very much. I know where this Hawaii Supermarket is. I pass by there sometimes. I'll stop on by and see if they have it. I'll give Arcadia Market a call too. I remember when American super markets used to carry it but I suppose other than Halloween and Thanksgiving there is not much call for it.

      Thanks!

Hi I did go to Hawaii Supermarket and they had some. I bought a stalk of it. I plan on growing it like I used to so I'll have to start on that this week. I also got one from the Alhambra Farmer's Market. They were closing down and only had pieces that they said were not worth buying because they were overly grown, i.e, they picked it when it was too ripe or something. They did not want to sell it because they felt it was junk so I said I'd buy it if they will sell it. I was expecting them to sell it for about $1.00 since it was junk but the guy said I can have it for free. It's kinda dried out so not sure if I can start growing from that one though.

The one from the FM is a red sugar cane which is sweeter than the green. The one from Hawaii Super Market is green sugar cane. I'm pretty sure I can grow the one from the Hawaii market because it's a very good piece. Hope the red one I can grow, well the red I should say is purple. The one at Hawaii Supermarket was $2.99. Spending $3 on a piece of sugar cane is too much for me but I am gonna grow it so I need it to start it so $3 is okay but if I was cooking with it then 3.00 for a stalk of sugar cane is too much because one stalk does not go very far. Should the one from the FM not work because it's too mature and dried out I'll go back and buy from those guys a fresher one even tho it's $3.00.

Thanks for your suggestion about Hawaii Supermarket.

If you want to grow sugar cane, perhaps you can find them at the San Gabriel Nursery.

That's a good suggestion because they carry everything. I love the San Gabriel nursery but have not gone in a couple of years. Time for me to take a trip over there. I appreciate your input. Thanks much!

I've found that Jons supermarkets almost always have fresh sugar cane at good prices and very fresh.

Thanks for the info. I know where there are two Jons, one in Glendale and one in the Los Feliz area. I gotta stop by and look for this at Jons.

Most of the Banh Mi & Che Cali places in the SGV make their own sugar cane juice (nước mía). I think it costs $2 or $3. I imagine you could buy some from them. The location on Valley, just east of San Gabriel, definitely sells the drink. Good luck.
