Spot Prawns in Santa Barbara?

Do they still exist? Is May their season?

Perusing menus, including C-hnd recs for seafood, I see mostly out-of-state or even out-of country stuff and touristy dishes.

Is there a place (open Mondays) where I might find a mess of simple fresh prawns or, failing that, local swordfish or lobster (what used to be called "crayfish)?

Many thanks.

  1. Santa Barbara Shellfish on the end of Sterns Wharf is the most direct purveyor of sea food - depending on what they offer that day. Small, casual place.

Kanaloa is known for its direct seafood sales but no restaurant. We do lack a great seafood restaurant in this town and when a restaurant says it specializes in seafood, it is almost a guarantee to go someplace else sad to say. So this pretty much includes most options down at the Harbor (different from the Wharf)

Hungry Cat (Chapala St) is an LA level bistro type place and does have a keen reputation for seafood, along with high prices but again a casual place. Good to check what they are offering and they have some peel and eat, or we peel and you eat shrimp options. http://www.thehungrycat.com.php5-20.w...

Have not yet been to the replacement for seagrass on Anacapa, but I think they are again trying to be a more select and premium seafood place. Arigato is excellent for sushi and some hot seafood items like their sublime seared scallops.

if spot prawns are in season- they are most likely on a "specials" menu. I would try Seagrass, SBShellfish and perhaps the Fishouse (correct spelling)- that is the sit-down sister to the Shellfish spot on the end of the wharf. Fishouse is across the street from the base of the wharf.
