Empress Pavilion in Chinatown
Has anyone been there lately and how was it? My mother is insisting on going there for mother's day. I would hate to waste all my dim sum calories on a substandard place when there are so many good ones a bit further away! Thanks.

There may be hope! I hadn't had an edible meal at Empress Pavilion in probably five years, but I was forced to go to a banquet there this past weekend and the food was pretty good. Now this was dinner, not dim sum, but maybe the ship is being righted!

I eat a lot of dim sum in SGV and was at Empress Pavilion a few weeks ago on a weekday morning when it was not crowded. It wasn't awful but I can't say it was very good. The items just tasted a bit off from what I'm accustomed to.

I think you'd be giving your mother an additional Mother's Day gift by introducing her to some better dim sum in a nicer place: Elite in Monterey Park on South Atlantic would be the closest. Sea Harbor in Rosemead is excellent. If she wants dim sum from carts rather than off the menu, my favorite is 888 Seafood on Valley in Rosemead. None of those are more than 15 minutes farther than Empress Pavilion and they are all a whole lot better.
