Please help me choose one of these in Kyoto

Some years back I ate at the Owariya. I was blown away by the taste of their udon and soba. Now that I'll be on Kyoto again, I wanted to consult you if I should go back.

So here are my options:

Where do you think I should go and why? I will probably only have one dinner for soba, so I have to choose one. If I have time, I might go to more, but that's a big IF, even more so because I will not be the only one making the food choices. So, Where and Why?

Thank you!!!

  1. I think of soba more as a lunch option than a dinner destination.

Thanks. I fully realise that. But we are sort of breakfast & dinner people, eating twice a day plus snacking. So we'll either go for a later lunch (as far as the opening hours allow) or for an early dinner.

Usually, I eat only once a day, an early dinner. I use sugary milky coffee to support me during the day and in Japan, in the absence of Starbucks (I know I'm terrible in this :-) I drink lots of tea and some little snacks. In Italy or Spain, I have been known to drink 6-7 sugary espressos during the day without needing much else :-)

Don't worry, there are plenty of branches of Starbucks in Kyoto.

I know :-) even very centrally located :-)

    2. i'm no expert about Kyoto, but i had great udon at Omen. I think i ate at tsunamachi, the soba was amazing, but it was 7 years ago and i am really not sure if thats the place i ate or not....

      1. In Kyoto, I had wonderful udon at Yamamoto Menzou. Definitely a place to drag yourself to!
