barbecue comparison

I spent the last several days trying barbecue from a bunch of places around NJ (week off activity) and here are some comments. For most of them, it was the only time I've been, so take them with a grain of salt. I'd be interested to hear other experiences or suggestions.

Hickory Hog:
Best ribs I've had in NJ. Perfect texture - pull apart tender but still moist - and killer sauce. Tangy and assertive, not just sweet KC style. The cajun style dry were good too, but I think a little goes a long way with them. I'll be going back for a follow up.

Georgie Porgie:
Good flavor in the ribs but a little too chewy for me. Good pulled pork and brisket.

Lake Side Deli (Rt 31):
They were out of ribs, but the brisket (sauced and combined with onions) was a pleasant surprise.

Grub Hut/Baja B Que:
Always at least decent, but the texture is sometimes good and sometimes chewy. Sauces are ok but don't jump out at you, same as most other places.

Ol West:
Pretty solid. Two types of beef ribs, which is pretty rare. Didn't like the slaw.

Memphis Pig Out:
Better than I expected, considering some of the reviews. Comparable to the other places but in a slightly different style.

Local Smoke:
Excellent across the board. Best pulled pork (carolina sauce). Great brisket.

Jersey Shore:

Mo Green's:
Great brisket flavor but very chewy. I didn't mind. Everything else was very good.

Texas Smoke:
I must have been on a bad day. The pulled pork was too dry to eat.

Famous Dave's:
The food is ok, but the overall experience is too Bennigan's for me. At least they have multiple sauce choices.

Big Ed's:
Too much sauce, meat too soft. Not bad if you know what you're getting, but probably shouldn't be on a barbecue list.

Pom Pom:
I liked the ribs and sides, I wish they had more choices.

  1. You tried 13 places....In a week?

probably 8 or 9 this week, the others a few weeks ago

    2. I found some decent pork ribs at Church's Kitchen in Vauxhall. Take out only, $10.99 for a half rack you probably can't finish. The fried chicken is the real draw, though. Once inside, you could convince yourself you are in Memphis.

When are you going for the old cholesterol check? only kidding, good job.

      2. We can assume these BBQ places are in NJ, I'm familiar with some of them. It would be helpful if the locations could be provided in case folks might be interested in trying some of them.

that is very impressive, i live in ny and am not 100% on nj geography, but those places arent even all near eachother

            good job!

        2. Since you get around all over the State, conspicuous by their absence are

          Hog Wild, Caldwell and

          Wood Pit, Montclair.

Any plans to add these 2 places to your list?
