Vegan eating in NOLA
I am traveling to New Orleans for 4 days and I'll be with two friends that are vegan. Any suggestions on where to eat? I am not vegetarian so the restaurant doesn't have to be strictly vegetarian, but they need options too! I've spent time looking at all sorts of places online, but none seem out of the ordinary--Except Green Goddess which I loooooove. Any restaurants that serve local meats and produce are a total plus. Also, any suggestions on cool bars that aren't pricey, full of annoying frat boys, and have great bear? Thanks a bunch! :)

If you haven't already visited, I have 2 suggestions.
Cafe Bamboo is on Esplanade under the Dragon's Den. They have an all vegan and vegetarian menu which I very much enjoy (if it is still open).
Also, Veggie Fest is this weekend, so y'all may want to check it out if you're coming this weekend. www.nolaveggiefest.com

one of my friends here is vegan, and she most often eats out at Byblos and Sake Cafe on Magazine- and further up Magazine just past Louisiana is a new Ethiopian place as well. If you see Holly cruising down Frenchman Street in her bicycle cart selling her Holly's Hot Tamales, she usually has a vegan tamale in the mix (as well as awesome meat ones) Juan's Flying Burrito (Lower Garden District on Magazine as well as in Mid City) also has several vegan options.

Sorry to say that Old Dog/New Trick is no longer. There is a bar there now,13 (with adequately priced drinks) and a number of vegetarian options, and I'm sure they can do vegan. It's reasonably priced, not the greatest food, but perfectly acceptable bar food. Try Bennachin and Praline Connection for great vegan options. And have a great trip

Old Dog, New Trick Cafe between Decatur and Chartres on Frenchmen in the Faubourg Marigny area is a vegetarian-plus-fish restaurant. Great for vegans, too. (Hope it's still open.)
Cafe Granada uptown has several vegetarian tapas options and a veggie paella.
Surrey's Cafe & Juice Bar and Slim Goodie's DIner, both in the Garden District, have a number of veggie and vegan breakfast and lunch offerings.
for beer and drinks:
Avenue Pub: 1732 St. Charles Ave. Decent beer selection for New Orleans but not as good as they like to think. However, it is decent for NOLA. We have issues getting West coast beers down here so not likely to see tons of hopped out cali IPA's. We have two wonderful local craft beer companies, Abita and NOLA Brewing, both are excellent. Try them all! You should really consider getting out of the quarter and heading uptown. Really, on St. Chalres Ave you have some pretty incredible drinking establishments!
Columns Hotel 3811 St. Charles Ave. Huge old mansion with a giant porch/deck overlooking gorgeous St. Charles Ave. Not a huge beer place but a perfect place for a martini or mojito or glass of wine. It was in the Brooke Shields movie "Pretty Baby." Incredible place for a drink, great vibe, beautiful mansion.
The Delachaise 3442 St. Charles-walking distance to Columns from here. Great beer selection of imports and belgian and german beers. Huge wine selection.
For these bars you could take streetcar and get off at Avenue Pub (they have a nice big balcony as well that is overlooking St. Charles.
After a few pints at Avenue Pub jump back on Street car and get off at Louisiana or Delachaise (actual street name) after a few there you can easily walk the two to three blocks to the Columns hotel.
Wow, my little game plan now has me in the mood to drink!
Enjoy and be safe! Let us know where you ended up.

There are no vegan restaurants here. Muriels, Bayona, and August have vegetarian offerings. As Tom Fitzmorris says to people with food issues, shop the menu for ingredients that suit your needs and ask the kitchen to fix it for you. They have the food and know how to cook. It shouldn't be a problem.
Couchon for local meat dishes.
