Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in Phoenix

Good food at or around the ballpark?

Have a free night in Phoenix Tuesday and am planning to see the Diamondbacks/Rockies game. Any decent food in or around the ballpark? Love Mexican, or anything fun and adventurous. thanks

  1. Outside the ballpark is a little thin, but Arrogant Butcher over on 1st St is doing some good food, and it's a great space, try the pate and the crab cakes. other options are Kincaids at the Collier Center which is mostly fish and chops, they have good appetizers but might be hit or miss for entrees.

Inside they have planty of variety, but the best stand is the Hungry Hill sausage vendors on the lower concourse. Great brats, polishs, italians, and Italian beef. Best thing is they'll throw an extra link on for $2. They also have some all beef footlongs with creative toppings at the stand right inside the main carousel entrance. There's a Mexican place and Chinese (Panda) inside as well.

    1. Mexican is surprisingly limited in the Downtown core, but Vitamin T at CityScape offers some very good tacos, tortas, & other Mexico City street fare. It's a quick-service, order-at-the-counter place.

Full service restaurants serving dinner within walking distance include Arrogant Butcher, Hanny's, Kincaid's, Nobuo at Teeter House, Pizzeria Bianco, District, Province, Thai Elephant, and Viet Kitchen.

It's a little bit of a walk from the ballpark, but Sens is a fantastic "Asian tapas" concept the has great food.

I'm sorry, cactuschowdah, I don't mean to be rude by way of direct contradiction, but I feel compelled to urge a visitor away from Sens. It's one of the few places that I think are not just bad, but downright offensive. It's schlocky mid-90s style Asian fusion, badly executed. Even if it were well-made (and across two visits and eight dishes I haven't had a single one that was), this was a poorly-conceived breed of food on the first pass two decades ago. It's whitewashed Asian... the palette of ingredients has been pillaged for the "safest" flavors, then badly assembled with little or no regard for the soul and traditions from whence they came.

I've no problem with fusion. Nobuo at Teeter House, mentioned above, is wonderful. I have a problem with bad food, and Sens is really, really bad.

Just a side comment - the last two trips to Kincaid's were disappointing. We dine at the Burlingame, CA location, right behind the SFO Hilton, and it still seems to be going fine. The PHX location - not sure what's going on there?

          To the OP,

          Enjoy,

        3. I like Los Dos Molinos. They're known for being spicy.

          1. thanks for all the suggestions! I'm getting on a plane bright and early tomorrow morning and looking forward to exploring for food then watching baseball. The weather will beat Cleveland, where I live. Looking forward to i!

            1. Alice Coopers is absolutely a must when in Phoenix. It's very close to the ballpark and the USAir/Suns stadium, Service is great and the place is really fun. Very extensive menu, great Sports Bar fare on steroids. Something for everyone and every taste, but not sure about vegetarians - you might want to check ahead on that. Excellent food and modest prices. We've been in Phx for three years and this place remains my overall favorite.

              1. In the ballpark, not sure that you'll find the likes of the food at Coor's Field, but then I have not tried every possibility, like the above-mentioned sausage stand.

Best that we have found was the fried chicken, that was catered (by the ballpark culinary department) for one of our suites. We now request that dish for our guests, and they have managed to do nicely for each game.

Now, if they would only kick up their wine list a few notches - but that's fodder for another thread.

                Enjoy,

                Hunt

PS - we had season tickets and two boxes at Mile High, and then Coors Field. We never saw the Rockies win, until we moved to PHX and embraced our new home team. First game was a wipeout by the Rockies... Hm-m-m, must have been us?
