Downtown Culver City Recommendation

  • 24
  • Share

Hi folks,

This Friday is my wife's birthday, and I'm looking to organize a get-together for a group of 12-13 people. A few places I have in mind for the downtown Culver City area...

Sublime Food Lounge
Meet
Fraiche

We'll then make our way to either Rush Street or Ugo wine bar to get post-dinner beverages. Can anyone suggest one of the three above, or other places in the same area? I've tried Ford's Filling Station (not very good), Tender Greens (good but no reservation), Gyenari (not quite sure if I liked it), K-Zo (good Japanese, but not in the mood for Japanese food this week).

Thanks in advance!

YI

  1. i've only been to Fraiche recently.

    underwhelming.
the pappardelle was just sort-of fair. ( to have a really good rendition of pappardelle go to hosteria piccolo in santa monica.)
the much ballyhooed chocolate purse was mostly a dense, syrupy, glob of some kind of very sugary chocolate goop with a fine, thin, wrapping of pastry and one tablespoon of vanilla ice cream (which didn't begin to offset the brown bomb). the candied hazelnuts that garnished the thing were the best part of the dessert.

Thanks - I'm also seeing mediocre reviews online. May pass on this place.

    2. Gyenari has closed and is being replaced by another modern Korean concept. What about Lukshon or Saint Amour? There is also the new City Tavern (near Saint Amour), which offers taps at the booths, but I have not yet been.

Didn't know Gyenari closed (although I can't say I'm surprised) - do you know if the new Korean place is open and is good?

Lukshon may be interesting option; I like how Father's office is right by which offers another post-dinner option. Is the place big enough to accommodate a good size group?

New place is MOKO (MOdern KOrean). Think it's basically the same place, same owners just more focus on the small plates. Menu looked good but I think it offically opens this week.

            Good info - thanks!

          2. re: Judge Ito

If you make the reservation enough in advance, Lukshon could probably accommodate that many, either outdoors or may be at the high tables in the center.

Father's Office, though in the old Helm's Bakery area, might be a good choice for the dinner itself depending on what type of food you're looking for. Their burgers and daily specials are quite good.

          3. based solely on what i've *heard* as i haven't been to either one, i'm going to throw A-Frame and Waterloo & City into the mix.

I think for a party of the OP's size and for the type of celebration, I'd try W & C. A-Frame is on the smallish side and seems more appropriate for groups no larger than six, and is very casual as well.

              1. re: bulavinaka

thanks, i was hoping someone familiar with both places would chime in.

i thought i had seen a photo of A-Frame with a huge central table and i know they have communal seating, so i thought it might work for a large group. glad you were here to set me straight ;)

Thanks, very helpful. I have heard of A-frame, along with a place called Alibi Room. Haven't been to either of those places, but they both seem to focus on smaller dishes...?

Alibi room just a bar that serves Kogi tacos. W&C is a great suggestion but note it's a few miles from downtown, over near Costco. A frame would be a very long wait for a large group.

Weird Akasha hasn't been mentioned once. I would go there personally.

W&C is a great suggestion and even has a private backroom that can be used for larger parties if need be. In addition to bulavinaka's observations, the no reservations policy at A Frame might also make it a tougher fit for OP's needs, unless they would make an exception for a large group (maybe on the patio?). However, ghg, you really do need to try one, if not both, of these two places as they are good, fun, reasonable and in our neighborhood.

                3. Mezza?

                  1. re: rcompton

I really like the food at Mezza, but I think the smallish dining room would feel really cramped with a party of 12. It's pretty casual as well - I think The Judge wants to hold court in something more in line with a festive atmosphere. They have wine and beer, but I don't consider these to be their strengths either.

                  2. I was at Sublime about 6 months ago and liked it a lot, so that works in terms of quality and all, but it's quite a hike to go from there to downtown CC if that's what you want to do. Waterloo and City is also nowhere near downtown CC. I'd focus on places in downtown CC so you all only have to park once...

In downtown CC, Akasha was a good add (good variety on the menu, full bar, great drinks and wine list, etc.). I've only been to Fraiche for drinks and apps since the new chef has come, so I can't weigh in on the full meal experience, but atmosphere there is definitely great. Le Saint Amour is another solid selection, though not with full bar, just wine and beer if that matters.

Lots of great places, hard to go wrong, I think.

Thanks for all the info! Agreed on W&C - looks like it's not in the area we're looking at. Will definitely keep the place in mind for the future though.

So I've heard a mixed reviews on Akasha - positives around good atmosphere, decent food selection. Negatives around the price being too high for the food. I've never been so this may not be true at all.

My wife apparently wants to go to Meet - said she's been there for brunch and she loved it. Since it's her birthday, will most likely have to go with her request... :) Anyone else been to Meet?

Hello your Honor. Say happy birthday to the wife and do report back to us so we can consider a return to Meet.

                    2. So folks, we tried Meet (http://www.meetrestaurantla.com/) last Friday. Sorry for my late post, but here's what I thought.

I ordered french onion soup and steak tartare. Really tasty onion soup, one of the best I've ever had. The portion is rather large though, so by the time I got to the steak tartare, I was 80% full... however, I was just as pleased with the main dish.

My wife ordered crab cakes and Poulet Roti (or roasted chicken). I don't do shell fish so passed on the crab cakes - she loved them by the way - but her chicken was excellent. Very much moist and tender, and juicy.

Above all, perhaps, the service may have been the best part of the experience. They are not only friendly, they are very attentive, and were very accommodating when we asked to split the check amongst 6-7 credit cards (although the website said no more than 3 splits). Superb.

Overall, we would definitely go back to this restaurant, and may also try their famous brunch. Great location, great for dates, great for groups. Recommend for sure!
