Texas BBQ [split from Las Vegas]
San Antonio has slightly better BBQ than LV (especially City Market in Luling)! It's a beautiful town -- have fun.

Lockhart is closer to San Antonio than Luling and has at least 3 great BBQ places. Kreuze, Smittys and Blacks. Smittys is generally rated to be the best. I've not eaten there but I've tried both Kreuze and Blacks. Totally unbelievable.

Thanks - we are going to try to get to all of these on late Saturday morning/early afternoon! The 'real" City Market in Luling is at the top of the list.
We just had a change in plans and will be traveling up to Dallas on Saturday night. Decided to splurge and stay at - and have dinner at! - The Mansion On Turtle Creek. Coming back, we will be staying in Austin on Sunday night and we plan to dine at Uchiko. My sister is bugging me to rent a convertible for the roadtripping portion of our trip..... Should be an interesting time!

Actually, Luling is closer, but only by about 10 miles, and it's a straight shot on I-10 from San Antonio (just check Google Maps or the equivalent). Real easy to get off there and then take US-183 north from Luling to Lockhart.
I'd rate them in this order:
City Market -- easy first because they did so many meats so well
Smitty's -- easily our favorite of the three in Lockhart
Black's--maybe the coolest looking of all four, especially the smoke rooom
Kreuz's was a disappointment to us, except for the fabulous links.-
re: Dave Feldman
Ditto Kreuz as a disappointment. I keep trying them occasionally because others have said they continue to have good luck there, but in my humble opinion, they've been pretty mediocre (and sometimes even bad) ever since they moved to the new location.
Luling is much easier to get to from San Antonio, if you can only go to one. Not only is it a bit closer to San Antonio, and a "straight shot," but you're on an interstate highway all the way so you can go 70+, vs wandering around on state highways.

re: James Cristinian
Hi, James! I will definitely be eating steak here and there. And I love TexMex.
I have a couple of questions that I hope you or others reading the Board can help me with.
1) Have you ever had Texas Wagyu beef? I finish a conference at the JW Marriott late Friday afternoon, and plan to just hang around there that night (no car yet) and eat dinner at 18 Oak. They have a Texas Wagyu New York Strip on their menu. They also have "Pearl Brewery Market Cut Grass-Fed Beef." I imagine both would be quite good. Your thoughts?
2) What is a good TexMex place for lunch around the Old Market Square?
3) What are your thoughts on the Pearl Farmers Market? I love a good farmers market, even if it's early in the season, and was hoping to go there right when it opens before getting on the road to Luling, Lockhart, and then up to Dallas.
Thanks!
Mary
p.s. I have reservations at Luke on Sunday night, when we get back from Dallas. Any recommendations from their menu?

re: rp1760
The only thing I can really help you with is TexMex. Mi Tierra is close by, but I'm not wild about it. You still might want to check it out, it's also open 24 hours so it's a good late night spot. I like Los Barrios, north of the city center, maybe a tweny minute cab ride. You might also check out Rosario's, a little south in the King William district. This is from saeydoc on Luke's. He's a big fan.
